Rainbow (sometimes stylized as RAINBOW; Korean: 레인보우, Japanese: レインボー) is a South Korean girl group formed in 2009 by DSP Media. The group consists of seven-members: Jaekyung, Woori, Hyunyoung, Jisook, Noeul, Seungah, and Yoonhye. Rainbow released their debut EP Gossip Girl on November 12, 2009 and made their debut stage on MBC's Show! Music Core on November 14, 2009.

History

2009–10: Formation and Gossip Girl

Around January 2009, the first rumors emerged regarding the release of a new girl group from DSP Media. The group was rumored to be composed of seven females, with accompanying reports suggesting that some members had been in training with DSP Media for four years.[1][2] During late October and early November 2009, DSP Media released daily teasers in the form of pictures of Rainbow, which culminated in the release of a music video teaser for Gossip Girl on November 6, 2009.[3][4]

On November 3, 2009, Rainbow was launched as an official musical group. DSP issued a statement explaining, "The members of Rainbow were picked so that their physical appearances wouldn't be inferior to Fin.K.L".[5] On November 11, the music video for "Gossip Girl" was released, coinciding with the five-song EP of the same name released the following day.[6] On November 14, the group debuted on Show! Music Core, performing "Gossip Girl", which was also their first single.[7] Following the release of Gossip Girl, the group promoted "Not Your Girl", a single from the EP which was written in response to SS501's song "U R Man".

On August 12, 2010, Rainbow released the single "A"; two days later, the group appeared on KBS's music program Music Bank. Subsequent performances were then broadcast on Show! Music Core and the SBS program Inkigayo. A second single, "Mach", was released on October 20. The next day, the first in a series of live performances was broadcast on the Mnet show M! Countdown. The group promoted "Mach" until November 14.

2011: So Girls, "Sweet Dream" and Japanese debut

In April 2011, Rainbow released their second EP, So Girls (The Korean title is SO 女, where 女 is the east Asian character for "woman"). One song from the EP, "To Me", was released as a single. The season of spring was the overall concept for this release, and the EP's photos featured the group members in white dresses, with a field of flowers in the background.

An image portraying luxury was used for the promotion of "To Me", as the group sought to convey the revenge theme of the song. For the single's composition, Rainbow collaborated with Japan's Daishi Dance and elements of the music clip's ballet choreography were reportedly adapted from Swan Lake. On May 14, 2012, Sega Toys and Dong Woo Animation both hired Rainbow to perform two songs for the Japanese/Korean Animated series Zoobles.[8] The two songs, titled "I Love Zoobles" and "Zooblesui Moheom" are both used as the opening (first opening in the Japanese Dub) and ending themes of the series, performed in three languages: Korean, Japanese and English. The songs were uploaded in DSP Media's official YouTube channel.

On June 21, 2011, the music video for Rainbow's next single release, "Sweet Dream", was released. The music video was filmed using a motion control camera. The repackaged version of So Girls was released on June 22, and contained alternate tracks such as "Sweet Dream", an acoustic version of "Kiss" (from Gossip Girl), a club version of "To Me", and an instrumental version of "Sweet Dream". On June 23, 2011, Rainbow performed on M! Countdown in support of the repackaged release.

On September 7, 2011, Rainbow topped Recochoku's weekly download rankings for the Japanese release of their "A" music video. The group held their inaugural performance in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district, drawing a crowd of 2,000 fans, and performed “A”, followed by fifteen minutes of discussion.[9] On September 14, 2011, Rainbow released their debut single in the Japanese market, "A", and reached No. 3 on Oricon's daily single chart, selling 10,141 copies.[10] The single release included a Japanese remake of their debut single "Gossip Girl", as well as an exclusive DVD. Rainbow made their Japanese TV debut on the show Sukkiri, performing "A". On December 7, 2011, the group released their second Japanese single, a Japanese version of the song "Mach" (Japanese: マッハ), and reached No. 9 on Oricon's weekly chart.

2012–13: Rainbow Pixie, Over the Rainbow and Rainbow Syndrome

On January 3, 2012, DSP Media announced that a section of the group will be formed as a trio. On the same day, a teaser image was revealed on DSP Media's website, revealing "Rainbow Pixie" as the trio's name. On January 4, 2012, another image revealed the members of the group as SeungAh, Jisook and HyunYoung. The group released their debut song, "Hoi Hoi", on January 12, 2012,[11] and held their first performance on Show! Music Core.[12]

Rainbow released a Japanese single on March 14, 2012, entitled "Gonna Gonna Go!" (Japanese: ガナガナGO!).[13] Their Japanese debut album, Over the Rainbow, was released on March 28.[14] On April 5, 2012, Rainbow unveiled their second new Japanese song in the Japanese dub of [Zoobles, titled "Candy Girls!".

The group released the first part of their first studio album, Rainbow Syndrome, on February 13, 2013. The group also made a special showcase for the album on the same day.[15] "Tell Me Tell Me" was used to promote the first part of the album. The second part of the album was released on June 4, and "Sunshine" was used to promote the second part.[16]

2014–present: Rainbow Blaxx, Innocent and Prism

A second subunit, named Rainbow Blaxx, was formed in January 2014 consisting of Jaekyung, Woori, Seungah and Hyunyoung.[17] Their special album, RB Blaxx, was released on Janauary 20, 2014.[18] The music video for the title track, "Cha Cha", was directed by Digipedi and was the fourth-most viewed K-pop music video globally in January 2014.[19][20] The music video, as well as the song's choregraphy, drew controversy for being "too sexual".[21][22]

Rainbow's third mini album, Innocent and the music video for its title track, "Black Swan" were released on February 23, 2015.[23][24] The group had their first comeback performance on M! Countdown on February 26. Their fourth mini-album Prism and the music video for its title track "Whoo" was released on February 15, 2016. They also held their commemorative showcase at the Yes24 Muv Hall in Seoul's Mapo-gu, which was broadcast through the Naver V App on the same day as the album release.[25][26] Rainbow held their first comeback stage with "Whoo" through SBS MTV's The Show on February 16.[27]
