Ramón Romero de los Santos (January 8, 1959 – October 13, 1988) was a professional baseball pitcher. He pitched parts of two seasons in Major League Baseball, 1984 and 1985, both for the Cleveland Indians.
Romero was originally signed by the Indians in 1976 and spent his entire career in their organization until after the 1985 season, when he was traded to the Minnesota Twins. He played one season in the Twins system before retiring.
He subsequently became a crack dealer. In 1988, police witnessed a drug deal in the hallway outside his New York apartment, and began chasing him. Romero ducked into his apartment, slammed the door shut, and headed up the fire escape. He attempted to get back into the building through a sixth floor window, but fell to his death. His body was taken to San Pedro de Macoris for burial.
Although his death was reported in Newsday, no mention of baseball was made there. It would be 25 years before the baseball community would learn of his death.[1]
