"Run Away with Me" is a song recorded by Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen for her third studio album, Emotion (2015).[1] It was written by Jepsen, Mattias Larsson, Robin Lennart Fredriksson, Oscar Holter, Shellback, and Jonnali Parmenius and produced by Mattman & Robin and Shellback.

"Run Away with Me" was released as the album's second single on 17 July 2015, and received critical acclaim.[2] The track was premiered on Hit Fm (Spain) on 17 June 2015.[3][4] Commercially, it reached the top 30 in Scotland, Slovakia, and Czech Republic.

Critical reception

Run Away with Me received critical acclaim upon its release. Critics complimented the use of the saxophone, Jepsen's songwriting, and the sense of nostalgia the song brings. Jezebel's Jia Torentino named the single a "100% Perfect Song [...] and on this day in the year of our Pop Lord 2015, it is the best song in the world".[5] Spin magazine referred to "Run Away with Me" as "the best pop song of 2015 yet", "an undeniable hit waiting in the wings for its moment", and a "big, bold, beautiful masterpiece".[6]

Paper magazine hailed the song as "just as much the pop perfection that is 'I Really Like You'" and "the perfect anthemic summer jam",[7] while USA Today welcomed "Run Away with Me" as "a marked improvement over ['I Really Like You']".[8] Time magazine wrote of the track, "'Run Away With Me' marries euphoric Swedish dance-pop with a pressing nostalgia for your teenage years, a time when the littlest crushes felt like time bombs and a time Jepsen is really, really, really skilled at evoking. In that sense, it’s 'Teenage Dream 2.0', right down to a bridge so catchy she has to repeat it twice".[9]

Rolling Stone ranked "Run Away with Me" at number 49 on their year-end list to find the 50 best songs of 2015.[10] The prestigious Village Voice named "Run Away with Me" the 11th-best single released in 2015 on their annual year-end critics' poll, Pazz & Jop.[11]

Live performances

Jepsen performed "Run Away with Me" at the Capital Pride in 2015.

On 1 May 2015, Jepsen performed "Run Away with Me" at a show in Beijing, China.[12] Jepsen performed the song at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on 19 August 2015.[13] On the drop-date of E·MO·TION in the United States, Jepsen performed "Run Away with Me" at The Today Show on 21 August 2015.[14] The track was performed as the opening song on Jepsen's Gimmie Love Tour.

Music video

The music video was released on 17 July 2015 on her YouTube and Vevo channels.[15] The music video was shot and directed by David Kalani Larkins.[16] The video was filmed in Dublin, London, Paris, New York, Toronto and Tokyo.[17]

Run Away with Meme

In early 2016, the song regained popularity by being used in a Vine trend called "Run Away with Meme". The memes mostly used the single's opening saxophone riff and chorus, and caught attention of mainstream media like BuzzFeed, MTV, and New York Magazine. [18][19][20][21][22][23] As of April 3, 2016, the Vine trend has had over 66 million loops, with the top vine having even more views than the music video itself. [24]
