Same-sex marriage in Alagoas
Same-sex marriage is legal in Alagoas (Brazil).[1][2] On 6 January 2012, a judge in Alagoas ruled that same-sex marriages will be performed[3][4] in the state instead[5] of the civil unions, making it the first state in Brazil to grant married status to same-sex couples.[6][7]
On 17 January 2012, a male couple who had lived together for almost 25 years became the second married same-sex couple in the state, and the first since the new ruling. Earlier, a lesbian couple had been able to have their civil union converted to marriage.[8]
