Scotiabank Theatre Toronto (formerly Paramount Theatre Toronto) is a major movie theatre at the RioCan Hall in the Entertainment District of downtown Toronto at Richmond and John Street owned by Cineplex Entertainment and opened in 1999.[2]

Name

The flagship theatre was originally called Paramount Theatre Toronto. The Paramount Theatre banner included several flagship theatres mainly located in downtown locations of Canada's major cities, using the trademark of Paramount Pictures under license, which is the film studio of former owner Famous Players' parent company Viacom. In 2005, Viacom sold Famous Players to Cinema Galaxy Income Fund — owner of Cineplex Galaxy Cinemas — creating the company Cineplex Entertainment. The theatre was rebranded as Scotiabank Theatre Toronto, under a sponsorship arrangement with Canadian bank Scotiabank. In 2007, Cineplex Entertainment and Scotiabank expanded their partnership by extending the Scotiabank Theatre banner nationwide, including the rebranding of other remaining Paramount Theatre locations, and by launching the Scene entertainment rewards program.[3]

History

Festival Hall opened in 1999 as part of a C$70 million development[2] and planning for the complex and theatre started in 1994.[2] The multiplex opened with 14 screens and 4,500 seats, and Toronto's first 3-D IMAX screen[2] as part of the RioCan Hall (originally Festival Hall[4]), which also contains a Milestones Grill and Bar, and а Marshalls store.

Until May 2014, the space housed a flagship[4] Chapters store.[5] From October 2007 until early 2010, the hall also housed CiRCA nightclub. Before CiRCA, the first tenant was Playdium family entertainment centre.[4]
