Selçuk İnan (born 10 February 1985) is a Turkish footballer who plays as a midfielder for Süper Lig side Galatasaray and the Turkey national team.
Early life
Selçuk İnan was born in Iskenderun, Turkey on 10 February 1985. By the age of 14, he was spotted by scouting agents and immediately signed by one of the local clubs, Karaağaçspor. His multidimensonal style of play and unique footballing mind were soon to be discovered by Dardanel Spor A.Ş.. At professional level, İnan scored his first goal in a league game against Antalyaspor in December 1, 2002, when he was only 17.
Club career
İnan began his career as a 14-year-old for Karaağaçspor. He signed for Dardanelspor in 2000, when he played till his departure to Manisaspor in 2005. Trabzonspor signed İnan in 2008 where he played for 3 seasons.[1] In early 2011, İnan moved to İstanbul for Galatasaray.
Trabzonspor
Trabzonspor which was being trained by Ersun Yanal (İnan's former trainer at Manisaspor) at the time, signed İnan in early 2008. İnan scored 2 goals against Ankaraspor in his first Süper Lig game at Trabzonspor. He also scored Trabzonspor's 2000th league goal at the game against İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi S.K. in November 1, 2008. He had formed a prolific partnership with strikers Umut Bulut and Burak Yılmaz (with Burak also being a team mate in Manisaspor). During İnan's services, Trabzonspor had the most successful 2 seasons of the decade, most notably finishing as the runners-up in the 2010–11 Süper Lig season.
Galatasaray
İnan agreed to a five-year deal on a free transfer with Galatasaray on May 25, 2011.[2] He quickly took over the Galatasaray midfield from the day he stepped foot in Türk Telekom Arena. Partnering up with the Brazilian midfielder, Felipe Melo, İnan began to manifest his exceptional skills, which helped Galatasaray to gain a higher level of offensive and defensive state of play. Selçuk İnan, being a fans favourite at Galatasaray also has a nickname called "Xelçuk" named after the Spanish midfielder Xavi.
2011–12 season
In the 2010–11 Süper Lig season, Galatasaray had finished 8th in the league table with 14 wins, 4 draws and 16 losses, which was the worst outcome in the club's history of 107 years. Right after the last game of the season, the club announced a council meeting in order to elect a new board.
During his first month, the fledgling Galatasaray chairman Ünal Aysal's first task was to bring in İnan to the team. Although the previous Galatasaray board which was run by Adnan Polat already had an agreement with Trabzonspor in the Selçuk İnan case during the 2010–11 season, it was the new board that brought in the player for free as İnan's contract with Trabzonspor was over.
After the first 4 games of the new season, Galatasaray had 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, which didn't seem so promising to the fans, although there was a remarkable sense of change in the team, especially in the midfield area.
İnan started to lead the team as weeks went by, which finally enabled Galatasaray to have 10 wins in a row, finish the first half of the season with 37 points, on the top of the league. By the end of week 34, right before the Süper Final series, Galatasaray was the top scoring and least conceding team in the league, and had a 9-point gap with their closest competitors, Fenerbahçe.
İnan scored his first official goal for Galatasaray against Samsunspor in September 18, 2011. His first free kick goal came against his former club Trabzonspor in December 11, 2011. The game resulted in a 3–0 win for Galatasaray. He scored his second free kick goal against Manisaspor December 21, 2011 which was also the winner for Gala, as the game finished 1–0. His third free kick goal came against Genclerbirligi on March 10, 2012 and the game ended as a 2–0 win for the lions. On April 28, 2012, İnan officially scored his 4th free kick goal of the season, being the second one against his former club Trabzonspor, followed by his 5th free kick goal against Fenerbahçe S.K. in the Süper Final series which was held in 2011-12 Süper Lig season.
In his first season at Galatasaray, İnan scored 13 goals and made 16 assists to his team mates in both Süper Lig and Süper Final competitions. As the top scorer and assister in his team, he was certainly the man in the spotlight throughout the season and gave the most effective help to Galatasaray on winning the league title.
During the championship celebrations which was held in Türk Telekom Arena in May 13, 2012,[3] Selçuk İnan was called on stage twice by the fans.
2012–13 season
On August 12, 2012, the defending Süper Lig champions Galatasaray, beat the defending Turkish Cup winners Fenerbahçe S.K. in the 2012 Turkish Super Cup Final. İnan provided 2 assists to his team mate Umut Bulut and scored the winning goal of the game from a penalty in the 90th minute right before the final whistle, and the game finished 3–2. As Galatasaray won the Turkish Super Cup for the 12th time, Umut Bulut was voted as the man of the match, although it was İnan who made the real impact in the game.
İnan scored his first goal of the 2012–13 Süper Lig season which being another late penalty, in the game against Beşiktaş J.K. on August 26, 2012,[4] which was the equalizer for Galatasaray, as the game finished 3–3. İnan also had 1 assist in the game, which was scored by Umut Bulut as İnan took the corner kick from the left hand side. He scored his second goal against İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor,[5] which was assisted by Burak Yılmaz.
On September 23, İnan started the game against Akhisar Belediyespor wearing the captain's armband,[6] due to vice captain Hakan Balta's absence. Game resulted in a 3–0 win for Galatasaray.[7] After a few disappointing performances both in Süper Lig and the Champions League during October, İnan came back with a wonderful display against Kayserispor in the Süper Lig match on October 27,[8] and had 2 assists to his team mates Burak Yılmaz and Cristiano Marques Gomez, with Cris' header goal coming from the set piece free kick which was taken by İnan by the left hand side.
İnan scored the free kick distanced 30 yards, which was the winner goal in the last Kıtalar Arası Derbi of 2012[9] which secured a 5 points gap in the league table as the game finished 2–1 for the lions.
At the end of the first half of the 2012–13 Süper Lig season, the midfielder had scored 4 goals and made 7 assists in total. İnan also made his mark on the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League scene, securing the 5th place in the group stage top passers list of UEFA.[10] İnan had been the 2nd on the list after Xavi Hernández, till matchday 5. The vice-captain was appointed as the first captain on December 25.[11]
İnan scored the 4th goal for Galatasaray in the game against Orduspor on February 25,[12] as he received a ball from Burak Yılmaz right in front of the box. His curved shot from 30 yards resulted in a spectacular goal which was also the decider as the game finished 4–2.
At the end of Galatasaray's 2013–14 Champions League campaign which the Turkish outfit were eliminated by Real Madrid in the quarter finals despite the 3–2 home win, İnan had made 5 assists in total and was again at second spot after Xavi Hernández in the top passers list of UEFA.com. İnan also had 92% pass accuracy in the second leg of the tie against Real Madrid, where he produced 87 passes till the final whistle, which had been a Champions League record for the season.
İnan scored 2 superlative goals in the league game against Sivasspor on May 5,[13] where Galatasaray claimed their 19th league title.[14] Being nothing more or less than an İnan classic, the beautiful free kick goal right 8 minutes into the game which also received an applause from Sivasspor manager Rıza Çalımbay,[15] put the lions up 1 – 0, followed by his 2nd and the team's 3rd goal, a majestic dribble which was crowned with a slick finish, after catching Emmanuel Eboué's through ball in the 60th minute. As Galatasaray won the game, İnan was again chosen man of the match.[16]
International career
İnan has played at every national team level for Turkey from U-16 to the senior side. He made his debut against Moldova on 13 October 2007.[1]
Although he was called up back in February for the Euro 2008 qualifiers match against Georgia, İnan couldn't join the team on the pitch, due to his injury. He also didn't take action in Euro 2008 group stage, due to his 2-game suspension prior to the tournament, which was refused to be reduced by UEFA.
İnan played at every game in the Euro 2012 qualifiers and made 6 assists to his team mates in total, although it was not enough for the Turks to take their place in the tournament.
He scored his first international goal on 24 May 2012 in a friendly match against Georgia in a 3–1 win for Turkey. His second goal was against Estonia in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification – UEFA Group D, on September 11, 2012.[17] İnan scored his third goal with a finely curled free kick over the wall against Andorra in Group D on March 22, 2013.[18]
Controversy with Turkey Manager Avcı
During Turkey's 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification group stage action, Turkey national football team manager Abdullah Avcı insisted on not playing İnan[19] despite his great run of form in club status. Many Turkish fans refused to believe it was a tactical issue but was rather a case that had been going on behind the curtains for some time.
After a couple of games without İnan, the Turkish fans started blaming the manager due to the unsuccessful results in the group stage. In the game against Estonia which was won by Turkey,[20] Avcı made a substitution in the 65th minute and İnan finally had his chance after a long period of dissension. The midfielder scored immediately and secured the win for Turkey. However İnan didn't celebrate his goal and had a quiet statement after the game, as if like he was under pressure or didn't have the liberty to talk. The sad look of Galatasaray man led to further questions amongst the fans.
As time went by, Turkey ended up risking their chances of making it to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but uncertainties regarding İnan and Avcı were still a hot and live issue in every part of the country. Journalist Fatih Altaylı, claimed that he had witnessed certain information, that there had been a religious or a sectarian conflict between İnan and the manager,[21] and that this was the reason why the two never got along.
There has been no statements about the matter, from either sides up till present day.
Personal life
İnan often remains private and is not seen in the media often. He has two elder sisters. He lives as a single person residing in Florya, İstanbul, near to Galatasaray's main training facility Florya Metin Oktay Sports Complex and Training Center. Him and Burak Yılmaz are two close friends and it's been the fourth time since the two are playing in the same team from the Turkey national under-17 football team. They grew up knowing each other. The other teams they played with are Manisaspor, Trabzonspor and Galatasaray.
