Kim Seol-hyun (Hangul: 김설현; born January 3, 1995), better known professionally as Seolhyun, is a South Korean idol singer, dancer and actress. She is a member of the South Korean girl group AOA and has starred in television dramas Ugly Alert (2013) and Orange Marmalade (2015).

Early life and education

Seolhyun was born on January 3, 1995, in Bucheon, South Korea.[1] She attended Kachiul Elementary School, Sungkok Middle School , and Arts High School. She attends Kyung Hee University majoring in the film department. Seolhyun has played piano since childhood (her mother is a piano teacher), and wanted to be a singer since she was in a school club band.

Career

In 2010, Seolhyun won the 8th Smart Model Contest (스마트 모델 선발 대회), a competition in which ordinary students wear uniforms. Winners of this contest often become celebrities. At the event, several talent agencies were represented, and Seolhyun was scouted by her current manager at FNC.[2][3] In January 2012, Seolhyun appeared in the music video for boy band F.T. Island's song "Severely" from the EP Grown-Up.[4]

On July 30, 2012, Seolhyun made her debut as a member of AOA on Mnet's M! Countdown with the song "Elvis" from their debut single album, Angels' Story.[5] Soon afterwards, she was cast in a supporting role in the television drama My Daughter Seo-young, which began airing in September.[6] She played Seo Eun-soo, an acting teacher.[7]

On February 5, 2013 Seolhyun and actress Lee Se-young were chosen as the new models of skincare brand Clean & Clear.[8] On April 23, Seolhyun was cast in the daily drama Ugly Alert. She played the youngest daughter of the family Gong Na-ri, a bright girl who dreams of becoming an actress.[9] This was her second drama and her first leading role. Seolhyun stated, "I'm nervous about doing a new project, and I'm also burdened. But I want to work hard again by thinking of it as another learning experience. I also want to touch the hearts of people."[10]

In 2014, Seolhyun modeled for denim brand Buckaroo and sportwear brand Mizuno Snow Gear.[11] She then starred in the 2015 film Gangnam Blues, marking her big screen debut.[12] She beat 500 other people who auditioned for the role of Seon-hye, the beloved younger sister of protagonist Kim Jong-dae (played by Lee Min-ho).[13][14] Seolhyun was cast in a new KBS variety show, Brave Family, but the program was canceled because of poor ratings after airing for 10 episodes.[15][16]

On February 10, 2015 it was revealed that Seolhyun would play the female lead in the KBS2 drama Orange Marmalade. The drama began airing on May 15, 2015. Seolhyun played the role of Baek Ma-ri, a teenage vampire, for which she won the Most Popular Actress award at the 2015 KBS Drama Awards.[17] On April 9, Seolhyun became the new model for fashion mall Enter 6.[18] On April 30, it was revealed that Seolhyun together with other actors would star in a new advertising campaign for SK Telecom, a drama named Let's Be Strange.[19] Seolhyun played the lead role in N.Flying's debut music video "Awesome", which was released on May 20.[20]

In August 2015, Seolhyun was cast for the thriller movie Murderer's Guide to Memory, playing the role of a murderer's daughter. The movie was directed by Won Shin-yeon and is scheduled for release in 2016.[21] In November, Seolhyun and Lee Min-ho were selected as promotional ambassadors for "Visit Korea Year".[22]

In January 2016, Seolhyun became a new model for Hazzys Accessories, shopping site G-Market, and Chinese fashion brand Mind Bridge. [23][24][25] [26]Later in the year, Seolhyun also became the primary endorser for eyes lenses Acuvue, sportswear brand Kolping, casual wear brand Spao, and Sprite.[27][28][29] [30] Seolhyun was also selected as an official ambassador to Korea national elections in 2016. [31][32] On March 2016, Seolhyun was a regular guest on Law of the Jungle in Tonga.[33] That season saw the highest ratings ever for show at the time. [34]
