Shahjahanpur Rang Mahotsav (शाहजहाँपुर रंग महोत्सव) is an Indian theatre and dance competition.More than 30 teams from all over India (20 states) participate in the competition.[1][2][3][4]

Introduction

Organized by Nation’s well known theatre group Abhivyakti Natya Manch,

Shahjahanpur Rang Mahotsav’ is an All India Theatre and Dance competition that used to be held every year on 16-19th December in Shahjahanpur (UP). It was started in the year 2014. The program is a ‘Cultural Tribute’ to the freedom fighters Pt.Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan and Thakur Roshan Singh who took birth on the land of Shahjahanpur, they fought with Britishers for the freedom of the nation. On 19th December, 1927 Britishers hanged them to death in the prison of Faizabad as they were found culprit in confiscating the goods of Britishers from train at Kakori Railway Station, that was famous as ‘Kakori Kaand’.[5]

What happens in Mahotsav

In Shahjahanpur Rang Mahotsav, teams from all over India used to participate that includes UP, MP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Assam, Manipur, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka. In 2014, total 19 teams participated while in 2015 participation increased to 27 teams. There are different competitions in Dance like:

Spectators got the chance to see various forms of dances like Punjabi, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Katthak, Bihu, Odiya and many more. While in theatre competition each team is given 1 hour time to present their play and the team used to be judged by Overall play including Direction, Acting, Script, Light Effects,Music, Coordination, Make Up,Set Design.


Program runs for four days from morning 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. First 3 days i.e 16-18th December, competitive performances happens while last day is the judgement day. On the last day, a 'RangYatra' used to be organized in the morning where teams came from across the country get ready in their traditional wear and covers the distance of approx. 5 km. Rangyatra starts from Agrasen Bhawan, Shahjahanpur which passes through the main market of Shahjahanpur and ends at Shaheed Dwar where firstly every team performs for 2 min short act and then they give ‘Shraddhanjali’ on the portraits of Freedom Fighters. In the evening, special selected dance performances gets organized following with the Judgement of the competition. To make the event successful, there are 10 Core members of the organization and 35 dedicated volunteers works whole heartedly throughout the event.[6]
