The Sheffield College
Coordinates: 53°22′55″N 1°27′50″W / 53.382°N 1.464°W The Sheffield College is a further education (FE) college in Sheffield, England. It was formed by the merger of six FE colleges in 1993. Its campuses are City campus (in the city centre, formerly Castle College), Hillsborough campus (which replaced Loxley College in Stannington, and Parson Cross College in 2005), Olive Grove campus and Peaks campus in Mosborough. The current Chief Executive is Paul Corcoran.
In summer 2015 the Norton campus closed down with many of the courses relocated to a new purpose facility at its Hillsborough campus. The college is one of the sponsors of UTC Sheffield, a new university technical college which opened in September 2013.[1] There are also plans to open a second UTC located on the old Don Valley Stadium and will form part of the Olympic Legacy Park. The second UTC will focus on Human Sciences and Computing.
Campus
City
In 2010,[2] Sheffield City College underwent a £60 million rebuild programme to create an environmentally-friendly, single-site campus.[3] City campus underwent a £60 million rebuild programme to create an environmentally-friendly, single-site campus. The site provides many vocational subjects including, hair and beauty, catering, business and construction.
Hillsborough
Located in the north of the city Hillsborough has a particular focus on sport, horticulture, A Level provision and higher education courses. The campus offers a range of provision for Foundation learners including Vocational Pathways and Personal Progress courses. Hillsborough is also home to the Centre for Creative Industries featuring a new digital, media, graphic design, journalism, music, performing arts facilities and courses. The facilities consist of television, photography, radio, music and performing arts studios.
Olive Grove
A £6.8 million new building with the latest engineering and plumbing facilities was completed and opened to students in September 2015.
The Sheffield College Centre for Technology, Engineering and Design, on Olive Grove Road, features the latest industry standard equipment and replaces the former building, demolished earlier this year.
The campus specialises in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, motor vehicle and plumbing.
Peaks campus
The Peaks Campus has also been extended to facilitate extra courses in partnership with local schools.[4] The £5.5 million extension was opened to students in September 2011.[5] Peaks campus offers a variety of vocational and academic programmes from Foundation through to A Levels and their equivalents.
Other Locations
The college also offers a number of employability courses and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) Fir Vale and Eyre Street.
Sheffield College Students' Union
The Sheffield College Students' Union is an organisation representing the interests of all students at The Sheffield College. Every student at The Sheffield College automatically becomes a member of SCSU.[6]
The Sheffield College Students' Union is affiliated to the National Union of Students. Kat Fletcher, President of the National Union of Students 2004 - 2006, is a former General Secretary of Sheffield College Students' Union.
Lifelong Learning Network
The Sheffield College is a partner institution of Higher Futures, the Lifelong Learning Network (LLN) for South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.
