Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School, also referred to by the acronym DMLMHS, is a public national high school in Silay City, Negros Occidental, Philippines.

History

Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School began as a city high school during the incumbency of then-Mayor Natalio G. Velez (1968-1986). At that time, the school was located near the Silay South Elementary School. It was envisioned to accommodate poor but deserving elementary school graduates and consequently offered free tuition.[1]

The school later became known as the Silay City National High School. After the donation of a parcel of land was made by the affluent Lopez family for the new school edifice, the school was renamed in honor of Doña Montserrat Lopez.[1]

Montserrat Lopez

Maria Faith Montserrat Lopez was one of the richest women in Negros Occidental in the 1930s. Educated in Spain, she married Rico Barbona, a poor farmer from Cadiz City in the late 1950s. They had three children. She died of heart cancer in the late 1960s.
