Smart Materials and Structures is a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed scientific journal covering technical advances in smart materials, systems, structures and device engineering.

The editors-in-chief from 1992–2007 were Richard O. Claus (Virginia Tech) and Vijay K. Varadan (University of Arkansas); and from 2008 to 2014 the editor-in-chief was Ephrahim Garcia (Cornell University). As of 2015, the editor-in-chief is Christopher S Lynch (University of California, Los Angeles).

Scope

A smart material is defined as any material that is capable of being controlled such that its response and properties change under a stimulus. A smart structure or system is capable of reacting to stimuli or the environment in a prescribed manner. Smart Materials and Structures is committed to the understanding, expansion and dissemination of knowledge in this subject matter. To this end, the Journal publishes articles in the following areas:
