South Carolina Highway 4 (SC 4) is a state highway in the southern part of the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway runs 54.2 miles (87.2 km) in a west-east orientation from Aiken east to Orangeburg.
Route description
Aiken County
SC 4 begins at an intersection with US 78 in the eastern part of Aiken. The route curves to the northeast, and intersects US 78 Truck/SC 118/SC 302. SC 4 and SC 302 form an approximately 12 miles (19 km)-long concurrency to the northeast. After leaving Aiken, the two routes intersect SC 21, SC 152, and SC 262 in rapid succession in rural Aiken County. The concurrency crosses the South Fork of the Edisto River and SC 264, also in rural Aiken County. All these intersections and river are before SC 302 leaves the concurrency. Immediately afterward, SC 4 crosses SC 394. Shortly before entering Orangeburg County, is an intersection with SC 113.
Orangeburg County
Entering Orangeburg County, SC 4 heads toward Springfield, and has two very brief concurrencies with SC 39 and SC 3 Business. It then crosses SC 3, and intersects SC 332, before heading northeast to Neeses. In Neeses, the route intersects US 321. It then heads nearly due east to Orangeburg.
West of Orangeburg, SC 4 intersects SC 400, and then forms a concurrency with US 301/US 601. Just before leaving the concurrency is a crossing of the North Fork of the Edisto River and, where the concurrency enters Orangeburg. The three highways have an intersection with SC 33. When SC 4 leaves the concurrency, US 601 Truck begins on the same alignment, and just after leaving the concurrency is an intersection with SC 507 The road curves around to an intersection with US 21 and US 21 Business. US 21 joins the concurrency until an intersection with US 178 and US 178 Business, where SC 4 meets its eastern terminus, and US 21/US 178/US 601 Truck continue on through the city.
