Somwarpet Vittalacharya Sunil (born 6 May 1989) is an Indian professional field hockey player.[1] He represented India during the 2012 London Olympics.

Early life

Sunil was born on 6 May 1989 to Vittalacharya and Shanta in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. At the age of four, he lost his mother. His father worked as a carpenter and his brother, a goldsmith.[2] Born to a poor family, he used bamboo for hockey stick during his younger days.[3]

Career

Sunil made his senior international debut in the 2007 Asia Cup in Chennai, the tournament that India won.[1] He was also a part of the team that won the silver at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in 2008. The 2011 Champion's Challenge was an early high point in his career in which he scored four goals, the most by an Indian forward.[1]

Hockey India League

In the inaugural auctions of the Hockey India League, Sunil was bought by the Punjab franchise for USD 42,000[4] with his base price being USD 13,900. The Punjab team was named Punjab Warriors.
