Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds is a 1989 post-apocalyptic Australian film directed by Alex Proyas. It was his first feature.
The film was shot on location near Broken Hill, New South Wales and at Supreme Studios Sydney.[2]
Reception
Influential Australian movie critic David Stratton praised the film as having a "special vision" with brilliant production design but said "the film frustrates because of its lethargy and stiltedness".[3] Stratton's opinion of the music score was that it was "uninspiring"[4] but Rolling Stone magazine called the soundtrack recording "an album of stunning instrumental beauty and exquisite soundscapes" and awarded it 4 stars.[5]
In 1988 the film was nominated for two Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards for Production Design (Sean Callinan and Peter Miller) and for Costume Design (Mathu Anderson and Angela Tonks).[6] It won the Special Prize at the 1990 Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival.[7]
In 1989 the soundtrack CD was nominated for an Australian Recording Industry Award (ARIA).
