Spring Garden Township is a township in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 12,578 at the 2010 census.[1] The township is adjacent to the city of York.

History

The Nook was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.[2]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 6.7 square miles (17 km2), of which 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2), or 0.30%, is water.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 11,974 people, 4,180 households, and 2,963 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,801.9 people per square mile (695.2/km²). There were 4,343 housing units at an average density of 653.5/sq mi (252.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.16% White, 1.66% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.64% of the population.

There were 4,180 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 23.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the township the population was spread out with 19.1% under the age of 18, 17.2% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $52,673, and the median income for a family was $61,461. Males had a median income of $45,491 versus $29,375 for females. The per capita income for the township was $28,784. About 2.2% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.5% of those under age 18 and 2.3% of those age 65 or over.
