St. Joseph's College of Engineering and Technology, Palai (SJCET PALAI) is a private self-financed college located in Palai, Kerala State, India. It is an AICTE approved college offering professional degree programs in engineering and management.[2] SJCET is affiliated with the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and A P J Abdul Kalam Technological University.[3][4] Four of its engineering undergraduate degree programs- Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering and Mechanical Engineering- are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, AICTE.[5] The college is an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution.

SJCET Palai is one among the top 5 self-financing engineering colleges in Kerala as identified by the Alumni Association of NIT Calicut for the information of the public. SJCET is also one among top 10 Engineering College in Kerala where percentage pass is always more than 80%.

History

St. Joseph's College of Engineering and Technology was established in 2002 by the Diocesan Technical Education Trust of the Catholic Diocese of Palai. It was conferred with the status of minority community institution by the Government of India in the year 2008.[6]

The international Conference on Global Colloquium in Recent Advancement and Effectual Researches in Engineering Science and Technology (RAEREST) focus on providing an international opportunity for sharing the ideas, knowledge and information of eminent and experienced professionals from industries, research organizations, faculty, research scholars and students from academic institutions among experts and researchers working in their area of interest.[7]

Reviewed and accepted papers will be published as one dedicated issue in Elsevier's Procedia Technology Journal (ISSN: 2212-0173) and made available in open-access on Elsevier's Science Direct, which is used by millions of researchers and professionals on a monthly basis guaranteeing maximum visibility of the research paper.[8]

Cunosure 2015

Cynosure is the quadrennial technical exposition organized by St. Joseph's College of Engineering and Technology, Palai, in its endeavor for social outreach to the local and mofussil residents. The programmes and themes of Cynosure are focused on youth empowerment and inculcation of scientific temper among them. Cynosure 2015 was held during the three days from 17 to 19 September 2015. The emphasis on this edition of Cynosure was to enthuse and inform the students of the Higher Secondary Schools about the professional education opportunities in Engineering and Technology and how these could provide a gateway to eminent careers and fulfilling professional lives.

Some of the principal events and noteworthy characteristics of Cynosure 2015 were:

Competitions were held for school and college students in prototype displays of projects, presentations of path breaking ideas for products and services, and general and scientific awareness quizzes. The success of Cynosure 2015 was vouched by the more than 10k predominantly young visitors who went back with heads held high and eyes sparkling.

Infrastructure & Facilities

SJCET is a residential campus having residential facilities for both students and faculty. The campus is provided with generator backed up continuous power supply. Facilities include canteen, cafeteria, book store, gymnasium, bank (South Indian Bank) and medical care centre.[10]

Library & Information Division

Library members can access materials (such as Books, Journals, Magazines, Digital material etc.) available in the library collection. The Library reading space can accommodate nearly 200 members. The SJCET Library is fully computerized with smart ID cards and barcode technologies. All the Library functions such as Acquisition, Circulation, Cataloguing and Serial control have been automated using integrated software.

Computer Centre

The computers provided in the college are connected by high speed LAN. A modern well - furnished Computer Centre with necessary accessories are available for students. An Internet Lab and two other computer labs are also available in the college. The Computer Centre is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all working days of the college.

SJCET Computer Center administers and manages the Campus and Residential Computer Network of the college. A fiber optic backbone which runs to a length of 10 km. provides high speed network connectivity to the Campus. Ten virtual network segments comprising nearly 750 systems are connected through fiber optic cables and high speed HP manageable switches to the Cyberoam firewall to form the network environment.

The SJCET Computer Center offers computing facility to the SJCET community. The computing resources include Servers and Workstations. A campus network with fiber optic backbone and a 200Mbps Leased line Internet connection and 10Mbps from NMECT which offer access to Internet for the students and staff round the clock, for their educational and research needs. In addition to that we have standby connection of speed 20Mbps.

Auditorium

An auditorium cum multipurpose building with a seating capacity of more than a thousand people was inaugurated in February 2006. The two-storied building, with balcony seating facility can accommodate 1260 people and is the longest college auditorium in Kerala. Apart from hosting all college functions it is used for conducting yoga and meditation sessions, cultural festivals, placement tests, college exams, etc.

Gymnasium

Gymnasium facilities are available for students in the campus. For making use of this facility, students have to join the gymnasium club. Gymnasium facilities are available for ladies students and staffs at St.Mary's Hostels also.

The students are provided accommodation within the campus itself. The hostels in the campus are:[11]

Besides these a few hostels are situated outside the campus for student accommodation.

A Faculty House is available in the campus for male faculty members. A separate wing in the Ladies Hostel is available for lady faculty members.

Student Societies

Spandanam

Spandanam is a charity organization in SJCET that works with the aim to improve the community we live in. The organization regularly conducts visits to old-age homes, jails, orphanages and community health centers. Spandanam co-ordinates many charity related activities within SJCET, the uniform collection drive being the most notable of them all, this encourages the students to donate their old uniforms to those less fortunate.

NSS Technical Wing

SJCET NSS unit is affiliated to department of Technical Education, Government of Kerala .It was inaugurated in April 2008 by Mr K. A .Kalith of RIT. The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is 'NOT ME BUT YOU'. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person's point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programmes. The NSS chapter actively conducts awareness drives and other related activities.[12]

A photo exhibition of late president Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam thwas conducted on 7 August to pay last respect to him.As part of World Youth Day, an essay writing competition was conducted for the new volunteers and a survey was thconducted on 12 August 2015 at the college to get suggestions for NSS activities.ndOrientation classes for newly enrolled 2 year volunteers were taken by Mr. Patrick and Mr. Babusanker S. (JCI thapproved personal trainers) in two sessions on 14 August.

As a part of Independence Day celebrations flag hoisting ceremony was conducted at the college campus by Dr. C.J. Joseph and message was delivered by Mr. Benkim B. A.As a part of Onam celebration NSS volunteers managed the decoration works and volunteered for the function.th Teacher's day was celebrated at the college campus on 5September by distributing greeting cards to all teaching staffs. Homage was paid to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on the same day.th thAs the part of Cynosure 2015 from 17 to 19 September, NSS unit arranged a stall to encourage organ donation and distributed leaflets to visitors to make aware of the importance of organ donation and collected consent letter from the visitors those who were interested in organ donation. An e-governance stall was setup and the unit members explained how to access government services via online and a printed brochure was distributed.A three-day technical expo was conducted at the campus from th th17 to 19 September for the public. The chief guest was Mr. Ashokan (NSS Programme Officer, Poly technique College, Pala). As the part of the programme a stall was arranged for hands on experimentation. In the stall technical exhibits like plasma globe, water level indicator for water tanks, different forms of LED lights etc. were exhibited.NSS unit members participated in a rally conducted by Pala Blood Forum to encourage blood donation among the public thon 30 September 2015. St. Thomas School, Palai was the venue of the programme. As the part of Gandhi Jayanti celebration and Sevana Vaaram, NSS volunteers took part in the cleaning camp at Bharananganam with the support of Bharananganam Grama Panchayath.As a part of world students day celebrations, a quiz thcompetition was conducted at the campus on 15 October 2015 on the topic Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

A seven-day NSS special camp was conducted from 18 to th24 December, 2015. The camp was held at St. Sebastian's HSS, Kadanad. A group of 46 volunteers under the guidance of program officer Mr. Benkim B.A. attended the camp. The main theme of the camp was “SAY NO TO PLASTICS”. The camp was conducted with the least possible use of plastics and plastic related objects. Other activities during the camp included a medical camp, a poor home visit, hospital cleaning, soft skill development classes, personality development classes by efficient mentors, a house visit and survey, classes on agriculture etc. Eminent personalities like Mr. Abdul Jabbar Ahmed (NSS State Programme Coordinator), Dr. C.J. Joseph (Principal, SJCET), Fr. Jose Tharappel (Bursar), Mrs. Treesamma Thomas (Vice President, Kadanad Panchayath), Mrs. Usha Raju (Panchayat Member) and other staff and faculty from college visited the camp site. Mr. Jerrin George and Mr. Bibin Thomas were the camp conveners.

IEEE Student Branch

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a global organisation to support the creation, development, sharing and application of knowledge about technology and science for the benefit of students. The IEEE student Branch of SJCET was inaugurated on March 2, 2005 by Mr. S Gopakumar, Head Computer Session VSSC & IEEE students activity Chair Kerala Section. He delivered an awareness session on IEEE and its activities. We are proud to have Mr. C Brajesh, Project manager NEST as the branch mentor. He is acting as a mediator between the college and industries. The total strength of IEEE student branch was 32 students with Mr. Binu P John as the Branch Counselor. The branch has conducted many activities like personality development Invited talks national level technical Symposium and as well as a Project Exhibition. The student branch secured the award for the largest student branch in Kerala Section for the year 2011 under the leadership of branch counselor Mr.G Sabarinath.[13] The present branch counselor is Mr.Anoop B.N of the Electronics and Communications Department.[14]

IEEE SB of SJCET conducted a project exhibition competition as the part of Cynosure 2k15. Innovative ideas and projects with working models were displayed at the event. Some of the prize winning projects were: Efficient All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), Smartphone controlled Car, EWaste Bin, Mobile application for Civil Engineers and students etc. In the junior section, the prize winning projects were: Regenerative braking system and Robotic arm. IEEE stall had various exhibits like 3D Printer, Home Automation System, Virtual Reality Headsets, Google Cardboard, Object detection robots etc.

CSI Student Chapter

A CSI chapter is functioning in the college as a professional society for CS students exclusively. Monthly subscription of the chapter magazine is sent to all registered members by the headquarters and this in turn may help the students in acquiring knowledge about the things happening in the revolutionary IT filed. This chapter is aiming at more events which may enhance the qualities required for a software engineer.

ENCON Green Club

The ENCON GREEN CLUB of SJCET was started by the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department to focus on Energy Conservation and Environment Protection activities. Effective Energy Utilization & identification of the areas of possible energy conservation and environmental protection are carried out at SJCET under the guidance of the HoD, EEE Dept. Our goal is to become as self-reliant as possible in the use of energy and water in our campus and be an example to other institutions. ENCON GREEN CLUB of SJCET is affiliated to the ENCON Club of BPCL Kochi from 2009 onwards and was inaugurated on 12 October 2009. The management, faculty and the students of our college consciously join hands to make the campus eco-friendly and energy efficient.[15]

ISTE Student Chapter

Since the formation of the ISTE Students Chapter in July 2003, the Chapter has been organizing many activities under the ISTE Banner for the benefit of the members. The ISTE students' chapter of SJCET, Palai was inaugurated by Dr. D. Balakrishnan (Chairman, ISTE Kerala section) in 2004. Right from its inception, the chapter focused on providing training to the students and encouraging innovation and excellence in students through various means.[16]

Sports

Yoga and mediation Yoga and mediation training program was conducted for the first year 2015 admission under KTU from 7 September 2015 to 4 December 2015. In total 0f 90 hours training was conducted for 9 batches where each batch has obtained at least 10 hours of training during this period. This has in turn resulted in improving mental as well as physical health of the students. Classes were taken by eminent personality in the field of YOGA, Dr. Jose Peryapuram who as an acharya in this filed for 10 years. Students were really motivated and enthusiast to undergo this training.
