The Fayette State Correctional Institution is a 2,000 bed Maximum-Security Prison located in a remote section of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The prison is located southeast of Pittsburgh and was built to replace two institutions^[2] (SCI-Waynesburg and SCI-Pittsburgh) to make the Commonwealth's energy bills more energy-efficient. It is also the only prison in the Commonwealth where Pennsylvania license plates are manufactured, holding that distinction since 2003.^[3]

Construction of SCI-Fayette

The $125 Million, 238-Acre facility was constructed on a former strip-mine site. The institution, which is 692,000 square feet, under roof and 53-acres under the perimeter fence.^[4] The facility comes complete with the state-of-the-art secure features that a modern prison features. The construction of the prison also helped local villages near the facility receive public sewage and created a sewage treatment plant^[5] for itself and neighboring homes.
