Stefan Simić (born 20 February 1995) is a Czech professional footballer who plays as a defender for Milan. He is of Croatian and Bosnian Serb descent.

Career

Simić entered Slavia Prague's youth ranks at the age of 6.[1] He rose through the ranks and became the youngest player to sign a professional contract with the club, aged 15 years and 11 months.[2] He played his first minutes for the senior side in the 13.2.2011 friendly match with Hajduk Split, the club he roots for as well,[3] as a part of the latter's 100 year anniversary celebration, in honor of his mother's passing.[4] A youth international, he, however, left the club before making his debut in an official match, joining the youth ranks of Genoa in Italy in January 2012.[5] The transfert cost the Italian club allegedly 12 million .[6]

He played for a year and a half for Genoa Primavera side before moving to Milan.[7] He was an integral part of the youth team that won the 2014 Torneo di Viareggio[8]

In the summer of 2014 he joined the Serie B side Varese on loan and accumulated 17 caps for the team during the season. After missing out on the first half of the 2015/2016 season due to injury to his right fibula,[9] Simić was supposed to join Hajduk Split in a 6-month loan deal in January 2016.[10] However, on the day he was supposed to sign for the club, while he was already in Split, he was recalled to Milan due to the injury of his teammate Mexes.[11]

International career

Simić chose to represent Czech Republic while having the possibility to play for Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, from which his parents came from and whose passports he holds as well.[12] He accumulated 40 caps and 1 goal between 2011 and 2014 for the Czech youth national teams, playing at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels.[13]

Personal life

Simić's family originates from Prijedor in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but lived and worked in Zagreb, Croatia before moving to Prague, before his birth.[14] He considers himself a fan of Hajduk Split and Slavia Prague.[15]
