Steven James Stuart Anderson (born 19 December 1985) is a Scottish footballer currently playing for St Johnstone. Anderson can play anywhere across the back line of defence although usually plays in central defence.

Career

St Johnstone

Defender Steven’s senior career began when he stepped up from Dalkeith Boys Club to Dundee United in January 2001.[1] He joined the Perth club from Tayside rivals Dundee United after being released, in the summer of 2004.[2] After being released by Dundee United, Anderson revealed he joined Rangers on trial, but the club decided against signing him.[3] Anderson considered Jim Weir as his mentor.[4]

Anderson joined Scottish club St Johnstone and played as a trialist against St Mirren on 21 August 2004 after Manager John Conolly at the time, saw him played in the reserve team and scored against [AC Milan] This convinced Conolly to sign Anderson.[1] Three days after signing for the club, Anderson made his debut for the club, in a 1–0 win over Raith Rovers. When they both meet again, on 30 October 2004, Anderson would be sent-off after fouling Hamed Sacko with 10 minutes left.[5] Upon his return, Anderson scored his first goal for the club, in a 4–0 win over Partick Thistle on 4 December 2004.[6] His second came when he scored his second goal of the season in a 2–1 win over Raith Rovers on 12 March 2005.[7] His contract initially ran until the end of the 2005 season, however, Anderson signed a new deal with the club.[8]

Since at St Johnstone, Anderson made impressive performances have kept him in St Johnstone's first team, to this day. He also plays in right back or a centre half role.[1] Anderson is nicknamed as "Victor Meldrew of Scottish football."[9] In 2005–06 season, Anderson find himself in the old face, as Manager Owen Coyle was appointed as the St Johnstone manager and he was appointed as the new captain. He would make 27 appearance in all competitions.[1] Anderson signed a new contract with the club in conclusion to the season.[10] In 2006–07 season, Anderson made thirty seven appearance in all competitions, as he continues to be in the first team regular. At the end of the season, Anderson signed a new one-year contract with the club.[11]

In 2007–08 season, Anderson signed an extended contract on a two-year deal.[12] Anderson would also made 28 appearance during the season. The 2008–09 season was a bad season for Anderson suffered injuries, which resulted being sidelined, mostly on the substitute bench and even on his return, he had his first team opportunities limited furthermore behind the defenders Kevin Rutkiewicz, Stuart McCaffrey, Gary Irvine and Graham Gartland.[1] His injuries plagued started when he suffered an ankle injury in the pre-season friendly.[13] It happen in September 2008[14] and then he suffered a knee injury in January 2009.[15] Nevertheless, Anderson scored his first goal on the last game of the season, in a 4–0 win over Airdrieonians, as St Johnstone were promoted to the top-flight.[16]

In 2009–10 season, Anderson continuously to struggle to earn back the first team, as he made seventeen appearance. Nevertheless, Anderson scored his first goal of the season from a header, as St Johnstone won 2–0 against Hamilton Academical on 3 October 2009.[17] In the quarter final of the Scottish Cup, Anderson scored again, as they won 2–1 against Dundee United.[18] In April 2010, Anderson signed a two-year contract extension that will keep until 2012.[19]

The 2010–11 season saw Anderson regained his first team place. forming a central partnership with Michael Duberry and made thirty-two appearance in all competitions. On the opening game of the season, Anderson received a straight red card after "scything" Suso Santana in the 73rd minute, as St Johnstone drew 1–1 with Hearts.[20] A week after his sending off, Anderson was again involve in the reckless tackle on Vladimir Weiss. Anderson defends his action that the tackle was to defend, not intentionally to make a rough tackle.[21] In September 2010, the referee, Brian Winter, made headline in the news after failing to send off Anderson despite showing two yellow cards to the player in the space of 12 minutes.[22] Anderson was banned for one match by the Scottish Football Association's disciplinary committee.[23] Despite the incident, Anderson was named as the Player of the Year.[24]

In the 2011–12 season, Anderson continues to be in the first team regular despite the departure of his central partnership, Duberry. He then signed a two-year contract extension, which will end of the 2013–14 season.[25] A few weeks after signing a contract, Anderson scored his first goal of the season, in a 5–1 loss against Dundee United.[26] Despite scoring in the match, Anderson wasn't impressed with the result and described this as "embarrassing".[27] In 2012–13 season, Anderson received a straight red card for a foul before half time, as St Johnstone drew 1–1 with St Mirren.[28] Anderson would later help St Johnstone qualified for Europe after beating Motherwell 2–0 on the last game of the season.[29]

The 2013–14 season was a mixed emotion for Anderson. At the start, Mannus formed in the central defense with Frazer Wright for four matches in the Europa League match, starting when St Johnstone won 1–0 against Norwegian side Rosenberg in the second round of the Europa League first leg.[30] St Johnstone would later be eliminated by Minsk in the drawing 1–1 in the second leg of Europa League after it went on penalties.[31] While in the league, he continued to be in the first team regular in defense until he came off in the early sixth minutes after "he slipped and suffered a painful hand injury as Kris Doolan raced in for Thistle's sixth-minute opener", as St Johnstone drew 1–1 with Partick Thistle on 28 September 2013.[32] After going to medical staff at the hospital, it would announced that Anderson would be out for up to eight weeks following a lengthy operation.[33] Anderson would describe his hand injury as he stated "the injury was absolute agony, the worst pain I’ve had".[34] Anderson made a recovery from the thumb injury in early-December [35] and played his first game since the injury, in a 3–0 win over Dundee United on 29 December 2013.[36]

On 18 January 2014, Anderson would then sent-off in a 3–3 draw against Hearts after given a straight red for a foul on Dale Carrick and preventing Carrick a goal scoring opportunity. This led St Johnstone to appeal over his decision and it was successful, allowing Anderson to be free to play.[37][38] Then, on 8 March 2014, Anderson scored his first goal of the season, in the quarter finals of Scottish Cup, in a 3–1 win over Raith Rovers.[39] Anderson scored two goals in two games against Kilmarnock[40] and Dundee United.[41]

He scored the first goal in the Scottish Cup, in a 2–0 win over Dundee United at Celtic Park.[42] For his performance, Anderson was named Man of The Match for his role.[43] Anderson, himself, dedicated the Scottish Cup to owner's of the club, citing "They’ve run the club really well over the years and it was time they got their day. So it’s great for them to get a bit of success. Every year we always think about getting a cup run."[44] Following the end of the season with a trophy, Anderson signed a new contract with the club on a two-year deal.[45]

After the season, it announced that Anderson was awarded a testimonial for his 10 years of service to St.Johnstone.[46][47] Upon learning of his testimonial, former manager, Owen Coyle, described him as "classic unsung hero", while Conolly had something to say on Anderson, quoting: "He fought his corner as a kid and it is the same now. He is a courageous player and that is a fine quality to have."[48] Unfortunately, in his testimonial, Anderson played for the whole match, but lost 4–0 against Hearts.[49]

At the start of the 2014–15 season, Anderson missed out four European match, due to a hamstring injury.[50] Anderson, nevertheless, made his return to the first team, in the opening game of the season, in a 2–1 win over Ross County.[51] Anderson scored his first goal of the season on 4 October 2014, in a 2–1 loss against St Mirren.[52] Anderson second's goal then came on 17 January 2015, in a 2–0 win over Partick Thistle.[53] Anderson's third goal came on 21 March 2015, in a 2–0 win over St Mirren.[54] Anderson was almost ever-present player if he didn't get a suspension, resulting him a one match ban, as he made thirty-seven appearance for the club.[55] Anderson also helped the club qualify for the Europa League for the third time running.

In the 2015–16 season, Anderson made his first appearance of the season, playing as centre-back in the second leg of first round Europa League against Alashkert on 9 July 2015. St Johnstone won the match 2–1, but was eliminated from the tournament when they lost on away goal.[56] But during the match, Anderson suffered a cheekbone after clashing with Siarhei Usenia and had to be substituted in the 72nd minutes, resulting him to be taken to hospital.[57] Initially his cheekbone injury was serious, but following hospital tests, it turns out Anderson's injury to his cheekbone was not serious, therefore giving all clear.[58]
