Steven Quartz Universe[1] is a fictional character from the 2013 animated series Steven Universe, created by Rebecca Sugar. Steven is a cross between a "Gem", a fictional alien being that exists as a magical gemstone projecting a holographic body, and a normal human being. Steven is voiced by Zach Callison.

Character

The 14-year-old[2] youngest and only male of the Crystal Gems, Steven is loosely based on Sugar's younger brother with the same name, who is a background artist of the show.[3]

The parents of Steven, whose love resulted in his nature, are Greg Universe, a man who used to be a rock musician when he was young, and the Crystal Gems' former leader Rose Quartz; Rose gave up her physical form so Steven could be born as the first Gem-human hybrid. He inherited his mother's gemstone, along with some of her abilities, which he had trouble using at the beginning of the series but got better at them as the show progressed. Steven's personality is similar to Rose; he is caring, kind, gentle, protective, and quick to forgive others. Also, Steven tries his best to protect anyone he loves from any encountered dangers as possible. Throughout Season 1, Steven thought that being a Crystal Gem was fun and cool, then by the end of the season, he realized how serious being a Crystal Gem is and how it is a burden on him. He's also hides some of his fears from the Gems. (In Joy Ride, he thinks that Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl blame him for Rose not being around anymore.)
