Steven Van Slyke is an American chemist, best known for his co-invention of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED)s, and his significant contributions to the commercial development of this technology. Together with Tang, they were first to report the fundamental structure of OLED in 1987 while working at Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories. He managed the overall commercialization effort of OLED during his tenure at Kodak, including materials development, device architecture optimization, and high volume manufacturing. In 2010, Van Slyke joined Kateeva as Chief Technology Officer leading the technical and strategic direction of the company.
Education and Career
Van Slyke received his B.A. degree in chemistry from Ithaca College and his M.S. degree in materials science from Rochester Institute of Technology.
During his early days at Kodak, Van Slyke and colleagues discovered some of the electron transport and emitting materials that are now widely used for small-molecule OLED's such as Alq3. He implemented the commercialization of these materials and determined the key factors in controlling device operational stability. His research effort contributed to the creation of over 35 U.S. patents and 40 publications in the areas of electronic materials development, device architecture and manufacturing. He was responsible for the development of RGBW OLED format and linear sources for high volume OLED manufacturing at Kodak, and oversaw both OLED display and lighting activities.
At Kateeva, Van Slyke leads the technical development of the company's inkjet OLED display manufacturing technology. He is also responsible for the integration effort with leading OLED materials manufacturers through strategic partnership.
