Subaskaran Allirajah (born 2 March 1972), a Sri Lankan businessman, is the founder and chairman of the Lycatel and Lycamobile groups of companies.[2] Lycamobile, which launched in 2006, now operates in 20 countries worldwide with a subscriber base over 14 million customers.
Charity
Subaskaran Allirajah founded a charity The Gnanam Foundation together with his mother Gnanambikai Allirajah in 2010 in order to provide help for marginalised communities and those who have been abandoned without care. It exists to extend funds to promote means of livelihood for those in need for specific projects on an individual, family or community basis. The Gnanam Foundation is based on the ethos of ‘teach a person to fish’ in its project work, providing opportunities for people to develop skills to support themselves in the future. Since 2012, The Gnanam Foundation have partnered up with many other organisations[3] including the British Asian Trust, Children's Hunger Relief and Muslim Aid to donate to a number of worthy causes. In 2015, The Gnanam Foundation set to construct 150 homes in the Vavuniya District of Sri Lanka.[4]
Awards
In October 2011 Lycatel was ranked 36th in the Sunday Times 250 leading mid-market private companies.[5] Allirajah received a gold award for Best Overall Enterprise in 2010 at the Asian Achievers Award ceremony for the impact he has made on the Asian community in the UK.[6] The Asian Voice Political and Public Life awarded Allirajah in 2011 its "International Entrepreneur of the Year’ award.[7]
In 2012 the English Asian Business Awards presented Allirajah with the "2011 Power Business of the Year" award, recognizing the growth of the Lycamobile business globally.[8] as well as the "Social Entrepreneur of the Year" award.[9]
