Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale (劇場版 ソードアート・オンライン -オーディナル・スケール- Gekijō-ban Sword Art Online -Ordinal Scale-) is an upcoming Japanese animated film based on the Sword Art Online light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. The film is produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Itō, featuring an original story by Kawahara, character designs by Shingo Adachi and music by Yuki Kajiura. It is scheduled to release in Japanese theaters in 2017.[1][2][3]

Plot

The film is set after the events of the anime's second season, in which Kirito, Asuna and their friends start playing a new game known as "Ordinal Scale" that, contrary to the previous ones they played, doesn't have a full-dive function and is based on a new augmented reality device instead called "Augma". In this game, players are ranked according to their achievements and players with lower ranks have serious disadvantages in duels against their higher ranked peers.

Production

At the Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2015 on October 4, 2015, it was announced that the light novel series will be adapted into an animated film, with the main staff returning from the television anime.[5][6] The film will take place after the television anime's second season, Sword Art Online II.[7] It was then revealed at the Dengeki Bunko Haru no Saiten 2016 event on March 13, 2016 that the film is titled Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, and is scheduled to release in Japan in 2017.[1] Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu will return to reprise their roles as Kazuto Kirigaya (Kirito) and Asuna Yuuki, respectively.[4]
