History

Formerly known as the Selangor Water Supply Department (Jabatan Bekalan Air Selangor (JBAS)), a Selangor state government department, SYABAS was incorporated on July 8, 1996 under the Malaysian Companies Act 1965 to undertake the privatization of water supply in the state.

The concession agreement

Through a concession agreement dated 15 December 2004 between SYABAS, the Selangor state government and the federal government, SYABAS was given a concession period of 30 years commencing on January 1, 2005. SYABAS took over all the functions of Perbadanan Urus Air Selangor Berhad (PUAS) in the area of water supply and distribution of water to customers within the state of Selangor and federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. The privatization involved over 7.3 million residential users, as well as 1.52 million industrial and commercial users, making it the largest privatization of water supply in Malaysia.
