Tåsinge is a Danish island south of Funen, at Svendborg.[1] The island covers an area of 70 km2 (27 sq mi) and has 6,111 inhabitants.
Tåsinge was once called Thorsinge or Thorsenge, which in the Danish means "Thor's Bed" or "Thor's Meadow". "Inge" could also mean young, or youngling.
Tåsinge is famous for Valdemars Castle, and was also the setting for the death of Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre.
People who live on Tåsinge used to be referred to as "Tøssinge"
Cultural references
- Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre. whose tragic love affair has been portrayed in several works of art, most notably in Bo Widerberg's 1967 film Elvira Madigan, committed suicide on Tåsinge on 20 July 1889 and are interred in the churchyard of Landet Church in the centre of the island.
