A constitutional referendum will be held in Tajikistan on 22 May 2016. The changes to be approved in the referendum are:[1]
- allowing incumbent President Emomali Rahmon to run for re-election indefinitely; the current constitution requires him to step down at the next elections.
- reducing the minimum age to run for president from 35 to 30; Rahmon's son would be 33 at the end of his current term.
- banning political parties based on religious platforms, ensuring the continued illegality of the main opposition Islamic Renaissance Party, which was outlawed in 2015.
