PKP Intercity is a company of PKP Group responsible for long-distance passenger transport. It runs about 350 trains daily, connecting mainly large agglomerations and smaller towns in Poland. The company also provides most international trains to and from Poland.
History
The company was founded after splitting Polskie Koleje Państwowe (national rail operator) into several companies to meet European Union Standards.
Operations
The company runs the following train categories:
- Express InterCity Premium (EIP, EIC Premium) - domestic high-speed trains (ED250 Pendolino) between major cities with obligatory reservation
(service begins December 14, 2014)[1] - Express InterCity (EIC) – high-standard trains between major cities and popular tourist destinations
- InterCity - affordable express trains with obligatory reservation; higher standard than TLK but the same fare
- Twoje Linie Kolejowe (TLK, "Your Rail Lines") – affordable express trains with obligatory reservation (with some exceptions); lower standard than InterCity. Some night TLK trains provide couchette and sleeper cars. A limited number of shorter-route TLK trains is 2nd-class only.
- Międzynarodowy (M) – international fast train (lower standard than EuroCity)
- Międzynarodowy nocny – international night train (lower standard than EuroNight)
A high-speed rail system is planned.[2] 20 New Pendolino trains were ordered from Alstom; the first was delivered in June 2013.[3] From then on test runs started to obtain the circulation permission. If successful it will enable PKP Intercity to start operation by the end of 2014[4] and increase passengers numbers in 2015.[5]
Fast trains without reservation were transferred to PKP Intercity from PKP Przewozy Regionalne on 1 December 2008. They were all converted to TLK on 13 December 2009.
Loss of passengers
From 2009 to 2013 PKP Intercity lost about 40% of passengers ridership (ridership lowered from 51 mln to 31 mln.). Of course it may be compared to general loss of passengers by railways (e.g. in 1990 passengers annual ridership was 790 mln, and in 11 months of 2013 it was in total 249,5 mln, 4 million lower than in 2012). However generally lower ticket cost railways like Koleje Mazowieckie had 5% higher number of passengers riderships (year to year). Critics and independent experts from for example Tor economic advisor group like Adrian Furgalski cite that strategy focused mainly on "next year we will have Pendolino" won't increase number of passengers. Others like Michał Beim from Instytut Sobieskiego even named "PKP Intercity to największy przegrany tego roku" (PKP Intercity is the biggest loser of that (2013) year).[5]
