The Amazing Race 28 is the twenty-eighth season of the reality television show The Amazing Race. The season premiered on February 12, 2016. It features eleven teams of two in a race around the world for a $1 million grand prize, with each team featuring at least one Internet celebrity.[1][2]

Production and filming

Development

Filming of The Amazing Race 28 began November 15, 2015, with host Phil Keoghan broadcasting each team's arrival at the first clue location, the Monumento a la Revolución in Mexico City, via live-streaming on social media. Unlike previous seasons, the race began in the teams' hometowns rather than at a traditional starting line.[1][3]

This season will span 18 cities and 10 countries over 27,000 miles (43,000 km).[4] Racers were reported racing around Cartagena, Colombia on November 19.[5] Filming of the show was also reported seen around Tbilisi, Georgia, spotted in Narikala fortress, Rustaveli Theater and The Bridge of Peace; and Jvari monastery in Mtskheta in November 27. This season marks the first time that the Race would visit Armenia, Colombia and Georgia.[4][6][7]

Cast

The cast is composed of Internet celebrities and their relatives or friends. Most of the cast have achieved prior fame through social media platforms including YouTube, Vine, and Instagram.[8]

Keoghan stated that the use of social media stars was considered a "social experiment" that attempted to bridge the gap between long-time fans of the show, and younger viewers who may not have been born when the Race first aired in 2001. For the latter group, Keoghan stated that bringing in people that these younger viewers may be more familiar with, particularly when promoted over social media, has helped them to find the earlier seasons of the show to watch.[9]

The following teams are participating in the Race, each listed along with their relationships as announced by CBS.[8]

Leg 1 (United States → Mexico)

Airdate: February 12, 2016[15]

One side of the Detour in Mexico City had teams get in touch with the local Mariachi band

Before even meeting together at the Starting Line, each team received a message in their homes from Phil Keoghan informing them that the Race had already begun. He instructed them to head to Mexico City and search for the Monumento a la Revolución to receive their first clue. The clue was for the Race's first Detour: a choice between Mariachi Madness or Great Bulls of Fire. In Mariachi Madness, teams had to find one of 350 Mariachi performers at Plaza Garibaldi that was faking their performance. They would then have to take the performer to a judge. If they were correct, they would get their next clue. If they were wrong, they would have to try again. In Great Bulls of Fire, teams had to assemble a torito, a papier-mâché bull, as part of a firecracker display. Once they had the approval of a judge, they had to light it up to get their next clue.

After the Detour, teams were instructed to go to the Cuevos de Parque Tematico Tialocan in Teotihuacan and pick one of three departure times for the next morning. Four teams would depart at 7:30 AM, Four more at 7:40 AM, and the last three teams at 7:50 AM. In the Race's first Roadblock, one team member had to search through the nearby caves and find thirteen pieces of an Aztec (Teotihuacano) mask. However, not all the pieces that were there were for the same mask, so teams had to correctly figure out the right pieces. Once they properly assembled their mask, they would receive their next clue, sending them back to Mexico City to the Museo Soumaya for the Pit Stop.

Leg 2 (Mexico → Colombia)

In this leg's Roadblock, teams had to search for an emerald, Colombia's most prized gems, inside the mud bath atop El Totumo volcano

Airdate: February 19, 2016[17]

At the Pit Start, teams were told to travel to Cartagena, Columbia, and upon arrival make their way to El Totumo in Santa Catalina where they encountered the Roadblock. One team member had to climb into the mud bath atop the El Totumo volcano and completely submerge themselves in the mud. Inside the mud would be several satchels containing gemstones in the mud bath, with the team member being required to find an emerald. Once they had their emerald, they had to wash it off before giving it to a judge, who would direct them to swim to their next clue, which was in a clue box in a nearby lagoon.

The clue sent them to Manzanillo del Mar where they had to look for a juice stand named Terraza Melló Farándula Jugos Naturales. Once there, they had to find some locals playing dominoes who would give them their next clue. However, for arriving in last place in the last leg, Scott & Blair had to perform a Speed Bump. In this Speed Bump, they had to help local fishermen haul a large dragnet out of the water. Once done, they had to collect all the fish captured before they could continue Racing. The other teams continued onto the Detour, which was a choice between Pop-Up or Parrilla. In Pop-Up, teams had to properly assemble a shelter with wood and tarp using provided materials and following a marked example. Once it was built to the judge's approval, they had to guide a car into the shelter, after which the driver would give them their next clue. In Parrilla, teams had to properly cook three fish dishes on a parrilla grill. Once their dishes were approved, they had to serve them to nearby locals to get their next clue, sending them to Plaza Bolívar in Cartagena for the Pit Stop.

Airdate: February 26, 2016[18]

The teams' first task on the third leg of the race was to travel to Cartagena's Plaza de San Diego where they had to search for a group of pollera dancers who will give them their next clue. This clue sent them to the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas where teams searched the catacombs for their next clue. This was for the Detour, a choice between Tickets or Tejo. In Tickets, teams worked as bus conductors on a Cartagena transit bus and had to attract enough passengers to earn at least COL$ 20,000 (approximately US$5.98). They could then trade their money for their next clue. In Tejo, teams played tejo, a traditional Colombian sport which involves hitting gunpowder-loaded targets with a stone disc. Once teams hit three targets, they would receive their next clue.

After the Detour, teams were told to head to Calle San Juan de Dios at the exterior of Museo Naval do Caribe and find the local mochila vendor to receive their next clue, directing them to the leg's Roadblock. One team member had to pick a mochila (a traditional Colombian backpack) and search around for other marked vendors. Once they found two exact matches of their bag out of hundreds on display, they could trade them for their next clue.
