Season Chronology
Season 2 ◄ Chronology ► Season 4

The third season of The Amazing Race Canada is a reality game show based on the American series The Amazing Race. It features twelve teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship. The grand prize includes: a CA$250,000 cash payout, “gas for life” from Petro-Canada, the opportunity to fly for a year anywhere Air Canada flies worldwide in Business Class, and two Chevrolet Colorado "Z71" Trucks.[1] For the third year in a row, Jon Montgomery returned as the host.

The season premiere was aired on July 8, 2015. Hamilton brothers Gino & Jesse Montani were the winners of this season of The Amazing Race Canada.

Production

The starting line for the third season of The Amazing Race Canada is located in Québec City, at Dufferin Terrace (French), facing Château Frontenac.

Development and filming

On September 23, 2014, CTV announced that the show was renewed for a third season during the second season reunion special.[2]

This season, teams will face a brand new twist, called the Face Off, where teams have to compete head-to-head in a pre-determined challenge, where winning teams can move on to the next challenge, while the losing team must wait for new challengers. The team who looses the last "Face Off" must face a time penalty. This could potentially dramatically alter the placement order of teams throughout legs of the race.[3] In an article for the official Amazing Race Canada CTV website, the "Face Off" was described as "first and exclusive" to the Canadian edition with host Jon Montgomery stating that they "invented" the twist despite having already been introduced under various names in at least five other Amazing Race editions worldwide.[4]

This season featured sportscaster James Duthie, who helped the teams during the first Roadblock in Leg 1 and Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek, who greeted the teams in the Pit Stop on Leg 6 in his hometown of Sudbury, Ontario.

Casting

Casting began in November 24, 2014, and as in the previous two seasons, an online site was used for submission of applications and audition videos.[2] The first three teams were revealed on June 15, 2015, with the rest named thereafter. The cast includes UFC mixed martial artist Elias Theodorou, footballer Nicholas "Nic" La Monaca and former CFL player Neil Lumsden. One member of the cast, Hamilton Elliott, is the first transgender contestant in full English-language version of the Race. (Jervi Li of the inaugural season of The Amazing Race Philippines was the first transgender contestant overall.)[3]

Broadcasting

Similar to the previous season, after episode 7, a special mid-season reunion/recap titled "After The Race" aired. Hosted again by James Duthie, the program reviewed the events of the first 7 episodes with the first 6 eliminated teams, minus Amanda who was unable to attend. Duthie hosted another "After The Race" immediately after the season finale with every contestant present to review the season as a whole.

  1. ^ Hamilton & Michaelia immediately used their Express Pass to bypass the Detour of leg 2.
  2. ^ Nic & Sabrina initially arrived 1st, but were issued a 2-hour penalty for failing to complete the soccer challenge. Seven teams checked in during their penalty time, dropping them to 8th place.
  3. ^ Nic & Sabrina arrived last at the Leg 5 Face Off, but could not compete against another team, since two other teams took time penalties rather than stay to finish the Face Off. Nic & Sabrina were not penalized for this. They also could not complete the "Ride It" Detour task after they were U-Turned as it was after dark and too unsafe. They received an unspecified time penalty at the task before continuing the race.
  4. ^ Nic & Sabrina were originally the last team to arrive; however, Neil & Kristin and Simi & Ope were penalized for not completing the Leg 5 Face Off challenge, bumping them up to sixth.
  5. ^ Brent & Sean used their Express Pass in Leg 7 and chose to bypass the time zone / flight time calculation challenge.
  6. ^ Dujean & Leilani initially arrived 3rd, but were issued a 2-hour penalty for failing to complete the time zone / flight time calculation challenge. Neil & Kristin arrived during this time, but were not checked in as they had incurred the same penalty. As a result, no other teams checked in during Dujean & Leilani's penalty time and they checked in at 3rd place. As Neil & Kristin were waiting out their penalty, the 3 remaining teams checked in, dropping them to 7th place and eliminating them with less than 2 minutes of penalty time remaining.
  7. ^ Dujean & Leilani chose to take a penalty because they could not finish the Brawn Detour due to an injury sustained by Leilani at the Roadblock. Already in last place, they also did not complete the Brains Detour when they saw they were U-Turned. They arrived last and were eliminated without their penalties being applied.

Leg 1 (Quebec → Ontario)

Airdate: July 8, 2015

In Toronto, teams visited the historic St. Lawrence Market in downtown to find a butcher store

The third season of The Amazing Race Canada started on Dufferin Terrace in front of Château Frontenac. For their first task, teams were instructed to head to Quai 22, where they had to search among hundreds of locked bicycles to find 2 that a combination given in their clue unlocked. They then had to ride the bicycles to the ferry terminal, where they took the ferry across the St. Lawrence River to Lévis, after which they chose a Chevrolet Sonic RS to drive to the airport, which contained their next clue and airline tickets to their first destination city: Toronto, Ontario. The teams that arrived first were given tickets on an earlier flight.

Upon arriving in Toronto, teams had to travel to St. Lawrence Market, where they waited until morning when a woman in a Race sponsor BMO shirt would give them their next clue. The clue contained the scrambled names of two "streets" inside the market: Center Street and Market Street, which intersected in front of a butcher shop. Upon unscrambling the names and finding this location, a butcher would give them their next clue, with an enclosed BMO credit card that would serve as the teams' source of money for the rest of the race

The clue sent them to TSN Studios, where they found a Roadblock clue asking "Who's feeling sporty?" One team member had to dress in a suit and tie and properly deliver a sports broadcast from a teleprompter alongside TSN sportscaster James Duthie. If at any point, they made eye contact with the wrong camera or mispronounced a player's name, they would have to start over. Once Duthie was satisfied with their performance, he would give them their next clue.

The clue received after the Roadblock instructed teams to head to the Atlantis area at Ontario Place to find their next clue: the second Roadblock, asking "Now who's feeling sporty?" The team member that did not perform the first Roadblock had to change into a wetsuit and complete a three-part obstacle course involving climbing across a 120-foot cargo net, walking across a narrow plank and taking a three-story plunge into the water below, and finally crossing a slippery log. At the end of the course, they found their next clue, directing them to the Pit Stop on the Toronto Raptors basketball court inside Air Canada Centre.

Leg 2 (Ontario → Chile)

One of the Detour choices in Santiago required teams to participate in a traditional Rapa Nui dance, originated from Easter Island.

Airdate: July 15, 2015

During the Pit Stop, all teams were moved to Canoe Landing Park to begin this leg of the race. They were given their next clue, which instructed them to fly to Santiago, Chile. Upon arriving in Santiago, teams made their way to Parque Geoaventura where they found their next clue: the Roadblock asking, "Who wants a better view?". One team member had to do a tandem paraglide into the skies of Santiago, 500 metres (1,600 ft) above sea level. Once they returned to the ground and reunited with their partner, a paragliding instructor would give them their next clue.

The clue received directed them to San Miguel Outdoor Museum to find the Sanación Equilibrio mural then search the neighborhood for five specific murals and take a selfie in front of each. Once all five selfies were completed, they showed them to the museum curator, who would give them their next clue and a wooden box. Teams then proceeded to Recoleta Community Center where they had to volunteer with children to help paint a section of a new mural in that center. Once the painting was done, they would give the wooden box, which contained a set of new art supplies, to the child they worked with in exchange for their next clue.

Teams were offered a chance to receive two Express Passes by traveling to Patio Bellavista at Barrio Bellavista and be the first team to find Bailarines de Cueca to pick them up, risking valuable time and possible elimination.

The clue received at the Community Center was for the Detour, and teams had a choice between Motion or Emotion. In Motion, teams traveled to Plaza de Armas where they had to strip down, then dress up as the people of Easter Island and perform a traditional Rapa Nui dance in front of a crowd. Once the dance troupe was satisfied, they would receive their next clue. In Emotion, teams traveled to Biblioteca Nacional de Chile where they learned a verse from Gabriela Mistral's famous poem, Valle de Chile and must perfectly recite it in Spanish. Once the poem is recited correctly, a judge would give them their next clue. The clue received directing them to Mapulemu Garden on San Cristóbal Hill for the Pit Stop.

Leg 3 (Chile → Argentina)

El Obelisco, a famous Buenos Aires landmark in Plaza de la República, was visited by the Race.

Airdate: July 22, 2015

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to fly from Santiago to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon arrival, they had to head to Plaza Canadá (Spanish) and find a carved totem pole from a British Columbia cedar to get their next clue. The clue instructed them to travel to Vuelta de Rocha of La Boca to find their next clue, which is for the Roadblock, asking "Who can do things to the letter?" One team member had to collect a pack of Race sponsor Mentos candies labeled with letters from 3 stores. They brought them to a puzzle board in the neighborhood playground. They then had to figure out the clues to spell out the names of four famous Argentine people: (1) Argentina's most famous first lady (Eva Perón); (2) The first Pope from the Americas (Pope Francis); (3) La Boca's favorite footballer (Diego Maradona); and (4) The King of Tango (Carlos Gardel). Once all of those answers are right, they would receive their next clue.

The clue sent them to Futbol Madero where teams had to participate in the sport of blind soccer. One team member had to wear a blindfold and navigate a soccer ball through pylons then shoot it into the net while their partner gave them directions. If the team member could score a goal in under one minute, a coach would give their next clue, sending them to the famous El Obelisco to find their next clue.

The clue was for the Detour which was a choice between Dance or Dine. However, teams were informed that were only six spaces available at each Detour. In Dance, teams traveled to Confitería Ideal (Spanish) where both team members had to change into the traditional attire, and learn to perform a complex tango routine. If the judge is satisfied with their dance they would get their next clue. In Dine, teams traveled to La Estancia where they had to serve asado, with one team member being a server and the other being a chef. The server had to take an order, in Spanish, and memorize 12 dishes from three patrons and collect the dishes from the chef and serve to the patrons. If all 3 orders were correct, they would receive their next clue. Both clues directed them to the Pit Stop at Puente de la Mujer.

Leg 4 (Argentina → Nova Scotia)

The Roadblock in Halifax required teams to climb up Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in the city.

Airdate: July 29, 2015

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Torre Monumental to start the leg and there they were instructed to fly to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Once teams arrived in Halifax Stanfield International Airport, they had to find a woman standing at a Race sponsor BMO kiosk inside the airport terminal who would give them their next clue.

The clue instructed them to head to Halifax Central Library where they had to count the number of black and white smartphone images amongst over 5,000 3" x 5" paintings hanging on a wall. Once they picked the correct number (134), a librarian would give them their next clue and leading for the Roadblock, asking "Who's got an eagle eye?" One team member had to climb the 300 feet (91 m) support of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge where they stepped up between the narrow pathway and used binoculars to scan the city for the route marker. Once they spotted the route marker they had to figure out the location is at Citadel Hill where their next clue is located.

The clue instructed them to Halifax Public Gardens where they searched for a kiosk and had to taste different Orange Julius smoothie flavors until they correctly identified each flavor to receive their next clue.

The clue turned out to be the Detour and gave the teams a choice between Bubbles or Suds. In Bubbles, teams traveled to Aquatron Laboratory at the Dalhousie University campus where Ocean Tracking Network was headquartered, there they had to dive down to the bottom of the Aquatron, grab two lobsters each, and band and tag them into a real tracking device that monitors movements. Once they were tagged, they would receive their next clue. In Suds, teams traveled to Garrison Brewing Company and had to find a delivery truck where they had to deliver beers, on foot, to three pubs among the streets of Downtown Halifax. They were instructed to return two kegs from each location. Once all three beers were delivered and two kegs returned they would get their next clue. The clues received from the Detour sending them to the roof of the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market for the Pit Stop.

Upon arriving at Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, teams had to choose one of Chevrolet Coloradoes, and using pictures for reference, they would pack it with items (two kayaks and a camping tent) needed for the rest of the leg. Once they packed the items correctly onto the truck, they received their next clue, instructing them to travel to Plage de la Dune du Sud. At the beach, teams discovered their next clue which is for the Roadblock, asking "Who's the king of the castle?". One team member had to bury their non-participating partner beneath the sand, with only their head visible, then, using a sample for reference, recreate a sandcastle around them. Once the work is approved, they would receive their next clue.

The clue instructed teams to Monument aux Pêcheurs to find their next clue which is for the first Face Off challenge. Teams had to compete against each other in a head-to-head kayak hockey game. They cannot proceed until beating another team. The first team to score 2 goals would win the challenge and receive their next clue, the losing team would have to wait for another opponent to arrive and try again, and the last team to arrive would have to wait out a pre-determined time penalty before they could continue.

The clue was for the Detour, giving the teams the choice between Ride It or Pull It. In Ride It, teams traveled to Centre équestre La Crinière au Vent (French) where they had to master the equestrian art of dressage form by mounting a horse and riding an obstacle course. Airdate: August 12, 2015

Teams received the clue at the Pit Stop instructing them to travel to Sudbury, in Ontario's Northern region. First they had to take a ferry to Souris, Prince Edward Island, then drive themselves to Charlottetown Airport. Upon arriving in Sudbury, teams had to choose one of the marked Chevrolet Trax and drive themselves to Vale Mining Company where they had to line up and wait for a miner to arrive. With the miner, two teams at a time descended over 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) into a mine shaft in a freight elevator. Once teams were underground they had to choose a rock of nickel ore, and break it open to find a pellet of 5 cent nickel. Once the nickel is found they had to figure out that the location is at the Big Nickel where they find their next clue.

At the Big Nickel, the clue found contained a Fast Forward, in which the team made their way to Science North where they had to feed a Blanding's turtle a tray of mealworms, crickets and superworms, and then each team member had to eat a dish of the same themselves. Once they finished, they would win the Fast Forward award.

Other teams had to choose a Detour, and these selections are Analyze and Synchronize, both are limited to 4 teams at a time. Both Detours requiring teams to drive themselves to Laurentian University. In Analyze, teams had to travel to the Forensics Training Facility and had to locate 10 pieces of bones and teeth inside a simulated crime scene, mark each spot with a flag, measure the locations, and graph each piece to scale on an evidence sheet. Leg 10 (India → British Columbia)

Teams visited Osoyoos, in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, known for its desert and lakes, for this leg of the Race.

Airdate: September 9, 2015

At the start of the leg, teams were instructed to fly to Penticton, in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. Once there, they had to travel to D'Angelo Estate Winery, where they would remove a white Chevrolet Silverado from a large maze by moving the surrounding black Silveradoes in either a forward or reverse direction, using the rear-view camera, only. Once freed, it would serve as their transportation for the rest of the leg.

At the end, they found their next clue and the Double U-Turn board.

The clue sent them to Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad, a 4,000 square-foot model train set, where they had to search among 18,000 tiny hand-painted figurines for one of Jon Montgomery holding a clue. Once they correctly identified "Mini-Jon", they used a magnifying glass to see that the clue reads "NK'MIP", referring to Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, the Pit Stop for this leg of the race.

Leg 11 (British Columbia → Alberta)

The Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton was served as the Pit Stop on this leg of this race.

Airdate: September 17, 2015

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Spotted Lake near Osoyoos to start the leg and there they were instructed to travel to Edmonton, Alberta. Once in Edmonton, they had to travel downtown to Edmonton City Hall and find the justice of the peace, who is performing a wedding ceremony, and interrupt her to receive their next clue.

The clue received instructed them to travel to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, where they found the clue for a Blind Detour, which simply gave teams a choice of "Paper" or "Plastic". In Paper, they had to sort recyclables from a fast-moving conveyor belt into two bins, one for paper and another for non-paper items, then weigh them once filled. If both bins weighed at least 13 kilograms (29 lb) each, they would receive their next clue. In Plastic, they had to carefully dismantle six dead television sets and separate the specific components to receive their next clue. If they broke any components, they would have to get another television.

The clues received were for a Face Off challenge, sending them to Ottewell Curling Club. There, they had to compete against each other in a game of curling. One team member would deliver the stone while their partner would sweep it as close as possible to the center of the target, or "button", at the end. After 8 stones each, the team whose stone was closest to the center of the button would win their next clue. The last team at the Face Off would have to turn over an hourglass and wait for the sand to run out before they could continue racing.

The clue received sent them to a Petro-Canada gas station in nearby St. Albert to find their next clue. Each team was given a Petro-Points card loaded with 250,000 points, all of which they had to spend in the store within 90 seconds, shopping for snacks and drinks only. If the products in their shopping cart totalled the maximum points, they received their next clue.

The clue sent them to Fort Edmonton Park, a living history museum, to search the grounds for Kelly's Saloon, where they found the clue for the Roadblock, asking "Who wants to raise the bar?" Playing the role of "Kelly", the proprietor/bartender, one team member had to memorize a script and take part in a historical reenactment of a liquor license raid. If they got a line wrong, they would have to go review the script and try again. Once they acted out the scene correctly, they would receive their next clue, sending them to the Pit Stop at the Muttart Conservatory.

Leg 12 (Alberta → British Columbia)

The resort town of Whistler in British Columbia was the main site of the final leg of The Amazing Race Canada 3.

Airdate: September 23, 2015

During the Pit Stop teams were moved to Art Gallery of Alberta in Downtown Edmonton to start the leg and there they were instructed to fly to Vancouver, British Columbia. Once there, they had to travel to Terry Fox Plaza near BC Place, where they found the clue for the first Roadblock, asking "Who wants to roll with it?" While suspended 200 feet above the ground, one team member had to successfully cross a narrow plank (painted with a crooked guide line) between the roof beams on a bicycle to receive their next clue.

The clue received instructed teams to drive themselves 115 kilometres (71 mi) north on Highway 99 (also known as the Sea-to-Sky Highway) to their final destination, Whistler, to search Whistler Olympic Plaza for their next clue. They made their way to Squamish Lil'Wat Cultural Centre, where they had to use a length of string corresponding to the scale found on a large world map to measure the total distance of the 12 legs traveled, in miles: 48,500 kilometres (30,100 mi), then use a whiteboard to convert it to kilometres. If their calculation was within 5% of the correct answer, they would receive their next clue.

The clue received sent teams to Bearfoot Bistro, where each team member would sabre off the cork of two champagne bottles, one with a traditional sabre, then one with the base of a champagne flute, to receive their next clue, which contained tickets for the Whistler Village Gondola to the top of Whistler Mountain. There they found the clue for the second Roadblock, asking "Who's ready to meet one's match?"

For the first part of this two-part Roadblock, the team member who didn't perform the first Roadblock was given a single ski of specific height and binding size, and had to search among thousands of skis on racks for the one that completes the set, then show it to an instructor. Once they had a matching pair, both team members had to ride the Peak 2 Peak Gondola to Blackcomb Peak and make their way to Momentum Ski Camp. For the second part of the Roadblock, the participating team member had to ski down a ramp and successfully complete a ski jump into a pool to receive their final clue, sending them to the Finish Line at the 12th hole of Nicklaus North Golf Course.
