The Lego Movie Sequel is an upcoming computer-animated adventure-comedy film directed by Rob Schrab, produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and written by Jared Stern, Michelle Morgan, Lord, and Miller. It is to be the sequel to the 2014 film The Lego Movie, and the third film in the franchise, set to follow the release of The Lego Batman Movie.

After the blockbuster success of the first movie, a sequel was already in the works before the studios released the first one. After so, Warner Bros. did not invite Village Roadshow Pictures to produce the second, and the film will be produced in Vancouver, with a Canadian company taking the role of Village Roadshow.

The film is set to be released May 18, 2018 through Warner Bros Pictures.

Production

After the critical acclaim and blockbuster success of The Lego Movie, plans of a sequel were already in action. On February 3, 2014, Jared Stern was hired to write the sequel, along with Michelle Morgan.[1] On March 12, 2014, Deadline reported that animation co-director Chris McKay will direct the sequel with Lord and Miller as producers.[2] Warner Bros. did not invite co-producer Village Roadshow Pictures to return as a participant in the sequel.[3] On April 10, 2014, it was reported that McKay wants more women in the sequel than men.[4] On July 28, 2014, it was reported that Chris Pratt wants to return to reprise his role as Emmet. It was also reported that Will Arnett might return to reprise his role as Batman, but has not decided yet.[5]

In October 2014, Warner Bros. scheduled The Lego Batman Movie for 2017, and The Lego Movie 2 for 2018.[6][7] On October 25, 2014, it was reported that Lord and Miller had signed to write The Lego Movie sequel.[8] On October 30, it was announced that Australia-based animation studio Animal Logic was in talks to produce the next three Lego films, the deal was not finalized at the time and the New South Wales government would make financial contributions to all the films.[9] On November 12, during an interview with BBC News, Lord and Miller revealed that there would be more female characters featuring in the film.[10]

On February 24, 2015, the sequel was officially titled The Lego Movie Sequel and Rob Schrab was officially announced as the film's director, replacing McKay as director as he would direct The Lego Batman Movie instead.[11]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released in May 18, 2018.[12] It was originally scheduled to be released in May 2017,[13] but the release date was later assigned to The Lego Batman Movie.
