Tirmizi (surname)

Tirmizi or Tirmidhi or Termezi (Persian: ترمذی‎‎ is a surname in Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia. It is used by Syeds who are mostly settled in northern-regions of Pakistan. As their forefathers migrated to Pakistan at that time India from Tremez, a town of modern day Uzbekistan hence they use the surname of Tirmizi.

Tirmizi , Syed families settled in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India claim to be descended from Islamic prophet Muhammad through his grandson Husayn ibn Ali, son of Muhammad's daughter Fatimah and his son-in-law Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib).[1]

History

Origins

Tirmizis mostly follow Suni Islam.They claim that during the days of prosecution Taqiya was developed to protect Syeds who were usually in the minority and under pressure from the time of the mihna(persecution) under Al-Ma'mun in the 9th century, while the politically dominant Sunnites rarely found it necessary to resort to dissimulation.[2] The doctrine of taqiyya was developed at the time of Ja'far al-Sadiq (d. 148 AH/765 AD), the sixth Imamiya Imam. It served to protect Shi'ites and Syeds when Al-Mansur, the Abbasid caliph, conducted a brutal and oppressive campaign against Sayyid and their supporters.[3]

Tremez

During those times most of the Syed families were displaced and sent to far off bordering towns of the Caliphate. Their elders were settled in Termez, which was a famous border town of cliphate in those days and still exists in modern day Uzbekistan. As these elders were following taqiyya to blend in with local population the future generations have kept following the Sunni Islam.This is similar to bukhari,Gilani syeds that also mostly practice Sunni Islam.

Sub-Continent

Syeds where ever they went were respected by local communities most of them were assigned religious duties by local leaders. When Muslim conquest of south asia began , Islamic forces from central asia also brought with them many Syed religious scholars who not only used to perform religious rites in army but also preached Islam to local population. Among them were the ancestors of modern day Tirmizi Syeds. As ancestors of Tirmizis came from Termez hence the surname Tirmizi.

Presnet Day

Tirmizis who are settled in Pakistan are mostly descendants of great Sufi spiritual saint Syed Ali Shah Tirmizi Pir Baba.Pir Baba's grave and shrine is in Bacha Killay village in the mountainous Buner District of present Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.[4][5]
