Tiruchirappalli Junction railway station is a junction station in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. It serves as the headquarters for Tiruchirappalli railway division of the Southern Railway Zone. The station code is TPJ, used for official purposes.

History

The Great Southern of India, a Railway Company was established in 1853 with Tiruchirappalli as its headquarters.[3] In 1859, the company constructed its first railway line that connected Tiruchirappalli with Nagapattinam.[3] Presently, Tiruchirappalli is an important railway junction in Tamil Nadu and is a separate division of the Southern Railway.[4]

Five rail lines branch separately from Trichy junction:

  1. Towards north for Virudhachalam, Viluppuram, Chennai, Tirupati, Nellore.
  2. Towards east for Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai,Nagapattinam, Karaikal Port, Karaikal.
  3. Towards south-east for Pudukkottai, Karaikudi, Manamadurai, Rameswaram.
  4. Towards south for Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam.
  5. Towards west for Karur, Erode, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Palakkad Jn.
