Playing career

Smith originally joined the Manchester City F.C. Reserves and Academy, before leaving in 2011, and joining the Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Reserves and Academy.

His first foray into the Town first team was when he appeared on the bench in Town's 2-1 defeat against Barnsley on 31 August 2013. He made his début for the Terriers in the Football League Cup game against Hull City at the KC Stadium on 24 September 2013. He made his first league start for the Terriers in the 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium on 23 November 2013.

On 4 February 2014, Smith renewed his contract with Huddersfield Town, which will keep him at the club until 2016.[1]

On 31 January 2015, Smith was airlifted to hospital with severe head trauma after colliding with the Huddersfield goalkeeper, Joe Murphy.[2] He was treated for 9 minutes before being given oxygen and stretched the pitch. After the game, an air ambulance landed on the pitch and airlifted him to Leeds General Infirmary.

His first goal for the Terriers came in their 5–2 FA Cup defeat against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on 19 January 2016.
