The Town of Port Hedland is a local government area in the Pilbara region of Western Australia for the twin towns of Port Hedland and South Hedland. It has a census population of 11,959 (ABS 2006),[2] of which only a few hundred live outside the settlement boundaries.[3] The council maintains 171 km of sealed and 380 km of unsealed roads.[4]
History
In 1894, Pilbara Road District (renamed Port Hedland Road District in 1904) was gazetted. On 1 July 1961, it became a Shire under the Local Government Act 1960, and became a Town on 18 March 1989.[5]
