Tulpehocken Township is a township in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,274 at the 2010 census.

Tulpehocken is a name derived from a Native American language meaning "land of the turtles".[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 23.3 square miles (60.3 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 3,290 people, 1,007 households, and 809 families residing in the township. The population density was 141.2 people per square mile (54.5/km²). There were 1,052 housing units at an average density of 45.1/sq mi (17.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 92.74% White, 3.80% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 2.28% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.98% of the population.

There were 1,007 households, out of which 41.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.4% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.6% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.32.

In the township the population was spread out, with 28.5% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 118.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 125.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $45,708, and the median income for a family was $47,880. Males had a median income of $34,848 versus $20,387 for females. The per capita income for the township was $17,092. About 2.6% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 2.1% of those age 65 or over.
