U.S. Route 43 (US-43, US 43) is a north–south United States Highway that runs for 410 miles (660 km) from Mobile, Alabama, to central Tennessee. The highway's southern terminus is in Mobile, at US 90. Its northern terminus is Columbia, Tennessee, at US 31.
Route description
Alabama
Between Mobile and Fayette and again from Killen to the Tennessee state line, US-43 runs concurrently with unsigned State Route 13 (SR-13). Between Fayette and Hamilton, US-43 is concurrent with unsigned SR-171. Between Hamilton and Florence, the unsigned partner for US-43 is SR-17. From its beginning in Mobile US-43 passes through the western part of Alabama. It serves as the principal route connecting Mobile and Tuscaloosa, and from Tuscaloosa to Muscle Shoals and Florence. Prior to the completion of Interstate 65 (I-65), motorists traveling from Mobile to Birmingham followed US-43 to Thomasville; from there, they followed SR-5 until its junction with US-11 near West Blocton.
Except for Mobile, Tuscaloosa, and Muscle Shoals/Florence, US-43 passes through rural areas and small towns.
History
Prior to the completion of Corridor X in western Alabama, US-43 and US-278 shared a concurrency with US-78 between Guin and Hamilton. The route used to extend up to Henderson, Kentucky. It overlapped with Interstate 24 and Interstate 65. It overlapped with the Edward T. Breathitt Pennyrile Parkway and what is now present-day Interstate 69. It was decommisioned when U.S. Route 41 Alternate came into existence.
Future
Preliminary talks have indicated that Alabama state officials support a plan to build future I-63 along US-43's route from Mobile to Muscle Shoals via Tuscaloosa. The plan is estimated to cost roughly $1.5 billion and is being spearheaded by U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, who is chairman of the Senate Transportation Subcommittee. The project is expected to help the economies of cities in the Black Belt by connecting communities western Alabama, the Tombigbee Waterway and the Port of Mobile.[2]
