Uday Umesh Lalit (born 9 November 1957) is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. Prior to his elevation as a judge, he practised as a senior counsel at the Supreme Court.[1]

Early life

Lalit was born on 9 November 1957 to U. R. Lalit who was a criminal lawyer and who was later appointed as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court.[2]

Career as a lawyer

Lalit joined the bar at Mumbai (then Bombay) in June 1983 and started practising in the Supreme Court of India in 1986. He worked with the former Attorney General for India, Soli Sorabjee, from 1986 to 1992. On 29 April 2004, he was designated as senior advocate by the Supreme Court. Thoroughness with the case, patience in explaining legal questions and the sober demeanour in presenting the case before the bench, were considered to be his strength as a lawyer.[3]

He appeared in a number of leading criminal cases. Politicians to cine-stars facing prosecution had engaged him in different courts. In 2011, the Supreme Court of India appointed him as the special public prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the very high profile 2G spectrum case. The 2G case involves a Union minister, top Bureaucrats, top businessmen and media persons as accused.[4][5][6][7]

As a judge

In 2014, a collegium of judges of Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India R M Lodha, recommended Lalit's name for elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court.[3] On 13 August 2014, he was appointed by the President of India as a judge of the Supreme Court. He shall serve on this post till his retirement on 8 November 2022.[8]
