Universitario Rugby Club, or simply Uni Tucumán, is a rugby union club from San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. Founded in 1943 by students, Universitario is registered with the Unión de Rugby de Tucumán.[1]

History

Universitario Rugby Club was founded by students from San Miguel de Tucumán on 21 September 1943, thanks to the good will of the Novillos, an affluent family from the city.

Originally a multi-sports club, association football, athletics and basketball were once practiced at the club. Universitario focused on rugby union for boys and field hockey for girls from the 1950s and today only those two sports are played at the club.

Along with Natación y Gimnasia, Cardenales and Tucumán RC, Universitario became one of the Unión de Rugby de Tucumán founding clubs in 1944.

Since then, the club has become one of the most successful teams in Tucumán, winning the Torneo del Noroeste a record 21 times and reaching the final of the Torneo del Interior in 2009. At national level however Uni has experienced poor results. Unlike fellow Tucumán clubs Los Tarcos Rugby Club and arch-rivals Tucumán Rugby Club, Universitario has never reached the final of the Nacional de Clubes.
