General characteristics of the period since the formation of the university, 11 February 1977 year until 1992. years is its institutionalization, creating material conditions for the development, gathering scientific nastavoga staff, organizing education on modern principles. From April 1992 until 9 May 1993, the University Dzemal Bijedic experienced many irregular and violent changes implemented, practically losing its autonomy.[2]

During the Croat-Bosniak War in May 1993, the University was renamed as Sveučilište u Mostaru (using the Croatian term for University), and the Croatian language was adopted as official language of the University. Muslim professors left the University and established a new university with the old name - the University Džemal Bijedić of Mostar. The basic condiditions were made in November 1993, when it created the basic conditions. At that time sparsely teaching and administrative staff had a number of problems, but they were using the then authorities, and with great effort and sacrifice their own managed to solve. The University has now managed to partially solve a number of problems, so that the working conditions more favorable than in the previous period.[3]

The University now employs 250 teachers and staff, and the teaching process are engaged 222 teachers and students from other universities. In the academic 2008/2009. year the University has enrolled approximately 12,000 students.[4]

Teaching the scientific process is performed in about 4500 m² učioničkog, laboratory and cabinet space in the campus (a former military barracks "North Camp"). Such a small space is one of the serious limiting factors for the development of the University, but this campus with the existing facilities is ideal for all the necessary facilities a modern city ordered the University to the University will be in the future and advocate.[6]

University Library, which lost the entire building and library holdings, has been placed in for that purpose made and interior design, with a steadily increasing library holdings.

From the students' standard of facilities, instead of the earlier modern dorm capacity 550 beds with an array of supporting facilities and opportunities to prepare 1200 meals a day, the students today at area campuses are available to two renovated pavilion, which are a function of the dorm-capacity of 60 beds, space for classroom and a kitchen. Nutrition students placed in the House was organized in the restaurant "Red Cross", which is located in the vicinity. The converted house "Darulilm Vakuf, also within the campus, located 25 students.[7]

In February 2003 the University Council adopted a Plan of Institutional Development in 20032010. A number of weaknesses that have been demonstrated so far in the organization and governance of universities has led to the realization of the necessity of implementing higher education reform. With the introduction of new forms of organization and integration, and changes in management, the university will meet the demands for harmonization of higher education and be able to engage as an equal partner in the international university network.[8]
