History

The Institute of Biological Sciences was formed on March 23, 1983 under Executive Order 889[2] from the existing staff of the previous University of the Philippines Los Baños departments of Botany, Life Sciences, and Zoology. It began operations on December 1, 1983 and in 1999, the Commission on Higher Education confirmed its status as a Center of Excellence in Biology.[3] The institute is composed of five divisions namely on animal biology, environmental biology, genetics and molecular biology, microbiology, and plant biology.

Other facilities that support these divisions are the Limnological Station, UPLB Museum of National History, University of the Philippines Open University, National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, National Crop Protection Center, Institute of Plant Breeding, and International Rice Research Institute.

The institute offers one undergraduate degree program in Biology with majors in the following fields: cell and molecular biology, ecology, genetics, microbiology, plant biology, systematics, wildlife biology, and zoology.[4] The twelve graduate degree programs offered through the Graduate School include six master's degree, three doctor of philosophy, and three doctor of philosophy by research.[5]

Research

Researchers from the institute discovered new species of spiders from Mount Makiling.[6]
