WOLX-FM (94.9 FM) is an American radio station licensed to Baraboo, Wisconsin, that serves the Madison, Wisconsin, area. The station is owned and operated by Entercom Communications, and airs a classic hits format, concentrating on music from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. WOLX broadcasts from a transmitter in Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo in Sauk County, Wisconsin; its signal can reach 33 of Wisconsin's 72 counties, reaching as far away as Tomah, Wisconsin, Rockford, Illinois, and West Suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin. WOLX-FM is a Grandfathered "Superpower" Class B, FM station; under U.S. Federal Communications Commission rules, a Class B FM station using an antenna height of 396 meters would be allowed a maximum power of 6,700 watts.[1]
The station used to air adult contemporary and easy listening formats before to switching to oldies music, initially concentrating on 1950s and 1960s music (as "Oldies 94.9") and transitioning over time to its current Classic Hits approach (under the "94.9 WOLX" branding). WOLX airs all-Christmas music, usually from Thanksgiving to Christmas, although the station has started playing holiday music as early as November 5 (in 2009). Christmas music started on November 25 in 2014.
Mike Waters and Heather Moore host 5:30-9am weekdays as Mornings with Mike and Heather, WOLX Program Director David Moore is the midday host, Jim McGaw hosts afternoons and Jesse Garon is on from 7pm-12m weeknights. Syndicated host Tom Kent is on 7pm-midnight Saturday with the Ultimate Party and his 70s Show airs 6pm-11pm Sundays. Scott Shannon's America's Greatest Hits airs 5-9am Sundays, followed by The Beatle Brunch hosted by Joe Johnson with music and conversation about the Beatles from 9-10am.
