"Wendigo" is the second episode of the first season of the paranormal drama television series Supernatural. The episode was written by showrunner and series creator Eric Kripke and directed by executive producer David Nutter. It was first broadcast on September 20, 2005 on The WB. In the episode, Sam and Dean decide to investigate disappearances in Lost Creek, Colorado, which may be related to a wendigo.
Plot
In Blackwater Ridge, Lost Creek, Colorado, a group of campers are attacked by a mysterious creature. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) find a clue in their father's journal which leads them there. They're notified of Tommy Collins' (Graham Wardle) disappearance and visit his sister, Haley (Gina Holden) and his brother Ben (Alden Ehrenreich), who are planning on looking for him the next day.
Sam discovers that multiple disappearances have been happening in the woods every 23 years. They notice a creature moving in Tommy's video and asks a survivor about it. They then go with Haley, Ben and their guide Roy (Callum Keith Rennie). Meanwhile, in a cave, Tommy watches as the creature kills prisoners. Sam and Dean soon discover the creature is a Wendigo, an once human who was forced to eat other humans to survive.
The wendigo kills Roy and kidnaps Haley and Dean and takes them to his lair in an abandoned mine. Sam and Ben find them through a trail and save them. Using a flare gun, Dean shoots the wendigo, who dies. Haley, Tommy and Ben are taken to the hospital while Dean tells Sam that they will find their dad. Sam agrees but states that he will now drive the Impala.

Critical reviews
"Wendigo" received generally mixed-to-positive reviews. Diana Steenbergen of IGN gave the episode an "okay" 6.7 out of 10 and wrote, "Supernatural officially kicks off its 'horror movie of the week' premise with this episode about a Wendigo, a creature from Native American mythology who feeds on humans. The episode itself is basically a not very exciting rehashing of the familiar story of a small group of people stranded in the woods, stalked by a murderous creature, but there are some moments that are worthwhile in the midst of it all."[3]
SpoilerTV stated: "This episode might not have the tight writing of the pilot and it doesn't get me emotionally like Dead in the Water, the next episode. It has far too much exposition and sometimes feels like I'm taking Monsters 101 when I watch it. Plus, some people find the wendigo cheesy. Still, it has the awesome campfire scene where we get the first really big brother moment and fantastic one-liners. Also I love Haley Collins as a PiP. She's smart, determined, and brave in the face of an unknown world. I wish all SPN PiP's were like her. In the end, this episode will never make my top 25 list. It may not make my top 50 but it is clearly in the win column for me - baton twirling or not."[4]
