Westfield Marion is the largest shopping complex in Adelaide, South Australia, located in Oaklands Park, serving greater Southern Adelaide. It contains approximately 330 stores, with anchor tenants including David Jones, Myer, Harris Scarfe, Target, Kmart, BIG W, Woolworths, Coles, Event Cinemas and Rebel Sport. The Event Cinema complex on the third level of Westfield Marion is the Southern Hemisphere's largest cinema complex, featuring 26 screens. The centre houses all of Westfield's management in Adelaide, located in an 8 story office block to the east of the centre, as well as services including; legal, child care, health and dental clinic. It also houses the head office for Fellas Gifts. The office tower is located at the original mall where the food court is facing Diagonal Road. Nick Scali Furniture and Bunnings Warehouse are located to the west of the centre. The South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre is also a part of Westfield Marion.

History

Westfield Marion was built in 1968 on a large expanse of land bordered by Sturt, Diagonal and Morphett Roads, and has seen three extensions in 1982, 1989 and 1997. The last extension saw the centre expand to a floorspace of roughly 119,000 m2.

Westfield Marion achieved major Australian firsts upon redevelopment in 1997 as the first shopping centre to have all three department stores, as well as all three discount department stores.

There is a 9.1 metre high replica of the Statue of Liberty above the upper-floor external concourse, originally promoting the "New York Bar and Grill", but remains despite a change of lease.

Future Redevelopment

Westfield have released plans for a $350 million expansion of Westfield Marion

The expansion will be done over two stages, the first being the ground floor additions and about 650 carparks. While Stage two will consist of the new upper-level mall, expanded food court and 400 carparks. The expansion plans have already been approved by the City of Marion's development assessment panel, with Stage one commencing in late 2013.[3]

Transport

The Marion Interchange is a bus interchange with connections to city-centre, Flinders University, Hallett Cove, Golden Grove, Blackwood, Aberfoyle Park, Noarlunga Centre and Port Adelaide. It is also about 500 m from the Oaklands railway station on the Seaford railway line, which has been redeveloped by the South Australian government into a transport interchange.
