The Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council is the unicameral legislature of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in the United Kingdom. It consists of 75 Councillors with one-third being elected every three years in four. The borough is separated into 25 wards. Councillors are democratically accountable to the ward they are elected to represent. Each ward is represented on the council by three council members.

  • Responsibility for policy direction, finance, partnership working, external relations within Greater Manchester and at national level.
Regeneration
  • Planning, transportation, delivery of future housing, infrastructure, economic development and green infrastructure needs.
Children and Young People Services
  • Responsible for issues and services for ages ranging from 0 -19.
Adult and Social Care
  • Supporting people’s improved health and wellbeing in Wigan, including relationships with health partners.
Environment
  • Building up safer communities with police and other partners and stronger communities based on sustainable and affordable housing.
Communities and Housing
  • Building Self Reliance, Strengthening Communities and Communications.
Leisure Client and Resources
  • Human resources, and links to the Communication Portfolio in relation to its strategic lead for outward-facing services across the council in terms of commissioning i.e. organisational development, reputation management, policy support and performance management (for example, the Joint Service Centre).
Service Transformation
  • Transformation plans, public service reform and growth, customer services, welfare reform and the modern Councillor.
