Yandex Browser, stylized as Yandex.Browser (Russian: Яндекс.Браузер), is a freeware web browser[5] developed by the Russian web search corporation Yandex that uses the Blink layout engine and is based on the Chromium open source project.[6] The browser checks webpage security with the Yandex security system and checks downloaded files with Kaspersky anti-virus.[6][7] The browser also uses Opera Software's Turbo technology to speed web browsing on slow connections.[8]

The browser is available for Windows, OS X, Android and iOS. In October 2014 a Linux beta version was introduced.[9]

Yandex is facing web search competition in Russia from Google Search.[10] Google Chrome, Russia's most popular web browser, uses Google Search as its default search engine, and in June 2012 Mozilla Firefox, the world's third most popular web browser, signed a deal to replace Yandex Search as its default search engine with Google Search.[10] As Yandex browser's "Smartbox" uses Yandex Search as its default search engine, the browser will help Yandex compete for Russian search market share.[11]

Distinguishing features

Distinguishing features of the Yandex.Browser include the following:

Market share

According to Liveinternet.ru analytics, Yandex.Browser reached 2.3% market share in Russia two months after its release.[13] As of July 2013 Yandex.Browser reached 5% for ru@ru slice at Liveinternet.ru and 7.9% as of March 2015.[13]

Release

The latest version for Windows, 16.3.0.6796, marks the second update to the stable version of Yandex.Browser, no longer beta as of a few weeks ago. The visuals have been improved since version 15, adding a blur effect and tabs available to be on the bottom of the screen. The beta is discontinued, so all beta users must now re-download and install Yandex.Browser but don't have to uninstall it first.
