Zhang Chunxian (born May 1953) is a Chinese politician and a current member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. Since 2010 he has served as the Communist Party Secretary for the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. From 2005 to 2010 he was the Party Secretary of Hunan Province.

Life and career

Originally from Yuzhou, Henan province, Zhang served as deputy minister, and later minister, of the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China from 1998 to 2005. In 2005, he became the Communist Party secretary of Hunan province. In 2006, Zhang simultaneously took on the role of chairman of the Hunan Provincial People's Congress. Zhang replaced Wang Lequan as secretary of the Communist Party of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in April 2010[1] and was replaced by Zhou Qiang in his role as secretary of the Communist Party and chairman of the provincial People's Congress.[2] Zhang was credited with bringing bus rapid transit (BRT) to Urumqi's major thoroughfares, and the construction of the Xinjiang International Convention Centre.[3]

He has been a member of the 16th, 17th and 18th Central Committees. He was elected to the 18th Politburo of the Communist Party of China in 2012.

Zhang is known for his use of a popular microblog service supported by Tencent, which spiked in usage during the 2011 National People's Congress. He is the highest-ranking official in China to maintain a microblog.[4]

Zhang is a potential candidate for ascension to the Politburo Standing Committee at the 19th Party Congress in 2017, however this is considered unlikely.[5]
