Season 1919–20 was the 43rd Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 21st time and the Scottish Cup for the 32nd time.

Overview

Dumbarton finished 11th, out of 22, in the First Division with 39 points, 32 behind champions Rangers. Despite a mid-table position, Dumbarton mananged home draws in the league against both Celtic and champions elect, Rangers.[1]

With the resumption of the Scottish Cup, Dumbarton were perhaps unfortunate to come up against Rangers in the first round. However they gave a good account of themselves, and lost a very close encounter by the only goal, after a 0-0 draw.

Locally, Dumbarton failed to progress from the sectional stage of the Dumbartonshire Cup but won the Dumbartonshire Charity Cup by defeating Vale of Leven in the final.

Note that the second goal (scored by Bob McDermid) against Albion Rovers on 7 February was the club's 1,000 goal in all national league competitions.
