The 2013–14 Norfolk Admirals season is the franchise's 25th season in the American Hockey League, which began on October 5, 2013.

Off season

Jarrod Skalde became the Norfolk Admirals assistant coach in July, having previously been head coach of the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones, was hired as Norfolk assistant coach in July.[1] Sudarshan Maharaj became the new goaltender coach,[2] and associate coach Mike Haviland, a past Norfolk head coach, departed from the Admirals to become Hershey Bears head coach.[3]

Most of Norfolk's roster was new to the team, with several making their American Hockey League debuts.[4] New additions included forwards Rickard Rakell, Brad Staubitz,[2] Joseph Cramarossa, Stefan Noesen,[5] Antoine Laganiere, Maxime Sauvé and Zack Stortini; and defensemen Andrew O'Brien, Stefan Warg,[6] Norm Ezekiel, Mike Little,[7] Brett Skinner,[8] Garnet Exelby and Nolan Yonkman;[2] and goaltender John Gibson.[5] The Admirals re-signed Mat Clark,[9] and defenseman Kevin Gagne and forwards Max Friberg, Steven Whitney and Charles Sarault rejoined the team after having played less than a dozen games with the team the prior season.[10] Harry Zolnierczyk was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins organization for defenseman Alex Grant,[11] and Admirals forward John Mitchell was traded to the Hershey Bears for center Mathieu Perreault.[12] Norfolk also saw several departures during the off-season, including forwards Luca Caputi,[13] Pierre-Luc Létourneau-Leblond,[14] and Rod Pelly.[15] Patrick Maroon, a winger who scored 36 goals for Norfolk last year, will join the Anaheim Ducks this season.[16]

After a training camp that began on September 24 at Norfolk Scope,[5] the Admirals held a pair of preseason games against the Charlotte Checkers on September 27 and 28. Norfolk lost the first game 4–2 despite Grant scoring two goals,[17] but won the second game 4–3, in spite of giving Charlotte seven power play opportunities.[18]

Regular season

October

Alex Grant recorded a hat-trick for Norfolk on October 11, scoring three power play goals within five minutes.

The Admirals opened the regular season with a pair of away games, both of which ended with a shootout. They won their season opener on October 5 against the Hartford Wolf Pack 3–2. The Wolf Pack tied the game with less than a second left in regulation, but Rakell and Devante Smith-Pelly both scored in the shootout and gave Norfolk the win.[19] They lost the second game 4–3 to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, in which Smith-Pelly and Max Friberg both scored short-handed goals. Rakell, who scored a power play goal in the game, had the only successful goal in the six-round shootout, his second in two games.[20] The Anaheim Ducks assigned forward Peter Holland to the Admrials after the opening weekend.[21] Norfolk next played two home games against the Binghamton Senators on October 11 and 12, winning the first in a 5–0 shutout, with all five goals in the first period. Grant scored a hat-trick with three power play goals within five minutes, and Smith-Pelly scored shorthanded, while Anderson made 32 saves.[22] The Admirals lost the second match-up 4–1, with Rakell scoring their only goal.[23]

In their first four games, only two of Norfolk's 12 goals were scored even-handed.[24] Noesen was declared out for the season on October 14 after suffering two torn knee ligaments during a team practice.[25] Norfolk split a pair of home games against the Albany Devils on October 18 and 19, winning the first one 2–1 in a shootout despite defensive mistakes by the Admirals, who allowed five penalties in the first period alone. Gibson stopped 31 of 32 shots, as well as four of five in the shootout.[26] Norfolk lost the next game 2–1, also in a shootout, despite Gibson stopping 28 of 29 shots.[27] The Admirals had been outshot in each of their first six games of the season.[26][28] Norfolk next won two games in a three-game road trip from October 25 to 27,[29][30] starting with a 3–0 shutout against the Adirondack Phantoms in which Holland scored two goals and Gibson earned his first career shutout.[29] Rakell was recalled to the Anaheim Ducks at the conclusion of the road trip.[31] By the end of the month, Zach Stortini lead the AHL in fighting majors.[32] Gibson was named AHL Goaltender of the Month for October, finishing the month with a .953 save percentage and a 1.44 goals-against average.[33]

November

Norfolk started November with a 3–0 shutout win over Albany, with Gibson making 40 saves and improving his GAA to 1.24. Coach Trent Yawney made the unusual mistake of circling the wrong player number when submitting his roster for the game, resulting in a minor penalty for "incorrect starting line-up".[34] The Admirals went to a shootout in their next two games, losing the first one against Bridgeport after tying the game with 4:06 left in regulation, but failing to score on the shootout.[35] They won on November 3 against the Hershey Bears after Gagne tied the game with 1:02 left in regulation after Gibson was pulled for an extra skater. Gibson made 40 saves and stopped all five Hershey shootout shots, while Wagner got Norfolk's only shootout goal.[36]
