The 2013–14 Binghamton Senators season is the franchise's 12th season in the American Hockey League, which began on October 5, 2013.

Off-season

The Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena had undergone $2.5 million in renovations prior to the start of the Binghamton Senators season, including replaced stadium seats, a new LED lighting system, new exterior stairways and renovated concession stands, a new outdoor marquee display.[1] During the off season, Tim Marks was hired as the Senators' new video coach, replacing Matt Meacham, who was hired by the Chicago Blackhawks. Marks had been video coach and assistant for Princeton University's men's hockey team for the previous two seasons.[2] One-year contract extension were also approved for Binghamton head coach Luke Richardson and assistant coach Steve Stirling.[3] Richardson coached development camp in July for Binghamton's major league affiliate, the Ottawa Senators, and also coached the organization's rookie tournament in September, which they won 3–0.[4]

The Senators saw several departures during the off-season, including forwards Pat Cannone, Louie Caporusso, Jack Downing, Dustin Gazley, Hugh Jessiman and Jakob Silfverberg; defensemen André Benoit and Brett Lebda, and goaltender Marc Cheverie[5] Several players also joined the Ottawa Senators including Stéphane Da Costa,[6] Jean-Gabriel Pageau,[7] and Buddy Robinson.[8] Nevertheless, Binghamton retained much of their prior year's roster heading into the 2013–14 season.[9] The team re-signed forwards Mike Hoffman, Corey Cowick and David Dziurzynski,[10] as well as goalie Nathan Lawson,[11] and defenseman and team captain Mark Borowiecki.[12] Rookies Cody Ceci, Matthew Puempel, Troy Rutkowski and Michael Sdao began their first full seasons with the team.[13]

Binghamton received two surprise assignments from the Ottawa Senators in centers Jim O'Brien and Mika Zibanejad.[4][14] Both had previously played for Binghamton, but O'Brien spent the entire prior season in Ottawa,[4] and Zibanejad had been Ottawa's fourth-highest scorer last year. Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray said Zibanejad did not exert himself during training season while others did.[14] The Binghamton Senators did not have their own typical training camp during the off-season, but instead spent a month training and practicing with Ottawa.[15] As a result, they did not play any preseason games, and did not go through their first on-ice practice as a team at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena until October 1.[16] During practices, Richardson's goal was to spend as little time as possible in the defensive zone,[17] and to improve the team's power play, which ranked 27th out of 30 the prior season at 13.6 percent.[18]

Regular season

October

Binghamton won their October 5 home opener 4–3 in overtime, coming back from a 3–1 deficit against Syracuse Crunch going into the third period. Derek Grant scored the team's first goal with a short-handed breakaway, and rookie Cody Ceci scored the overtime game-winner. Borowiecki and Mark Stone both left the game due to injuries,[19] and Stone would remain out for the rest of the month.[20] The Senators next played two home games against the Norfolk Admirals on October 11 and 12, losing the first in a 5–0 shutout. Goaltender Andrew Hammond, in his first start of the year, allowed all five goals off 14 shots in just the first period.[21] Binghamton won the second match-up 4–1.[22] Over the first three games, the Senators had scored on only one of 13 power play opportunities,[23] the 23rd worst power play record in the league.[24]

On October 18, the Ottawa Senators recalled Grant and sent forward Stéphane Da Costa down to Binghamton, after Da Costa failed to score any points in four games for Ottawa.[25] Binghamton next split a home-and-home weekend series against Syracuse on October 18 and 19, winning the first one 6–2 after scoring five unanswered goals. Lawson made 40 saves and Hoffman scored twice, including the game-winner.[26] The Senators had their first home loss of the season in the next game, falling 4–1 after allowing three goals against in the third period.[27] Binghamton defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6–5 in overtime on October 20, scoring on all four power play opportunities. Hoffman got two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal in overtime.[23] The Senators had scored six power play goals the previous three games, giving them the number one power play record in the league, up from 23rd of 30 just one week prior.[24][24]

On October 22, the Ottawa Senators recalled Mika Zibanejad, who led Binghamton in scoring with two goals and five assists.[28] Binghamton ended the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' undefeated streak with a 4–3 victory on October 25. Nearly squandering a 3–1 lead going into the third, the Senators won in a shootout after Da Costa and Puempel both scored.[29] The next day Ludwig Karlsson was called up from ECHL's Elmira Jackals, Binghamton sent while Troy Rutkowski and Jakub Culek down to the team.[30] The Senators lost 3–1 to the Adirondack Phantoms on October 26, with Wideman scoring the team's only goal. It marked Wideman's fourth consecutive game scoring a point, and the fifth straight game Binghamton had scored on the power play, bringing their league-leading conversion rate to 32.3 percent.[20]

November

Binghamton lost 3–1 again to the Phantoms on November 1, with Robinson scoring the team's only goal while short-handed.[31] Borowiecki was recallde to the Ottawa Senators on November 2, but Binghamton nevertheless defeated the Syracuse Crunch 4–2 later that day.[32]
