The 2013 MTV EMAs (also known as the MTV Europe Music Awards) were held at the Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam, Netherlands, on 10 November 2013.[2] This was the second time the awards had taken place in the Netherlands, the last time being in 1997.[3]
Several performances of the main show were performed at different locations in Amsterdam than the Ziggo Dome. Dutch DJ Afrojack performed at the Melkweg and was joined by Snoop Lion for the performance of 'Gin and Juice'. The American band Imagine Dragons performed their song 'Radioactive' at the Heineken Music Hall.[4]
Nominations
The nominees were announced live on MTV Netherlands at 12:55 (CET) on September 17, 2013. The nominees press launch aired at various times throughout the day on localized MTV channels across Europe.[5][6]

Regional nominations
Fans were also able to vote for nominated artists from their respective territory starting Tuesday 17 September 2013. The local winners were announced on 24 October 2013 and received an EMA award. They also moved on to the next phase of voting starting Friday 25 October 2013 and compete for the regional title. The 10 official Worldwide Act nominees from each region were announced on Monday 1 November 2013, and battle for the Worldwide Act Award.
